He is generally considered to be one of England's greatest composers — indeed, he has often been called England's finest native composer. Purcell incorporated Italian and French stylistic elements, but devised a peculiarly English style of Baroque music.

I've been completely obsessed with this piece (and Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra) ever since I heard them for the first time in my music's classroom, about 12 years ago, when I was just 10 or 11 years old. I must have heard hundreds of pieces in those 2 years of musical education in school, but these 2 pieces really engraved themselves in my mind.

@Ninja Toe Quite right. Pride and Prejudice 1813.https://www.janeausten.org/jane-austen-books.asp. This music had been forgotten by then. as it was written for an opera 1676 Abdelazer or the Moors Revenge ,Dryden. It seems odd to use it as a dance.

This sing featured in my 2018 gcse music exam. Even though it was only two years ago it is mental how music just encapsulates specific memories. Its like whenever I hear this it just throws me back into my music exam as if everything I have done since that exam was just a dream. When I listen to this I tend to remember specific aspects of my life back in 2018 that I cant without listening. The power of music is very real.

I liked this as a child when it was the theme tune to a BBC costume drama called "The First Churchills" about the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough. (That gives my age away!) This is a really good setting of it.

Yes, I remember the closing credits for each episode of "The First Churchills" playing this piece. I didn't see it on Masterpiece Theater when it was first shown (1971), but on the Tenth Anniversary special repeat.

Wonderful and beautiful rendition! Sounds like Goldilocks..the tempo is not too fast, not too slow...just right! Playing slower would make you want to ...zzzzz, faster and it would ruin it's magisterial nature.

No lid on harpsichord and still not picked up by microphone. Nevertheless, I really like your interpretation of this chestnut. Well played! This time around I counted measures. This is very nearly 8 bar phrasing - standard fare in Mozart's time, yet it still feels so asymmetric. Bravo, Purcell & ye!

The phrases •are• 8 bars in the “refrain”—but grouped 2 + 4 + 2 as a hemiola. Part of Purcell’s genius entailed messing with standard phrase lengths and groupings…
