Hozier was born in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. His mother is the visual artist Raine Hozier-Byrne (who also designed his latest album cover). He began a degree in music at Trinity College, Dublin, but dropped out midway through his first year in order to record demos for Universal Music. While at Trinity, he became involved with the Trinity Orchestra. He was a member of Anúna from 2008 to 2012, and appears as a soloist on their 2012 release "Illumination" singing "La Chanson de Mardi Gras". He toured and sang with the group internationally including performances in Norway and the Netherlands.
In 2013, Hozier released the EP "Take Me to Church EP" (also containing "Like Real People Do", "Angel of Small Death and The Codeine Scene" and a live version of "Cherry Wine"), with the title track becoming his breakthrough single after it went viral on YouTube. It reached number one on the Irish iTunes singles chart and number two in the official chart on 25 October 2013.
Hozier followed up Take Me to Church with the new EP "From Eden EP" (also containing "Work Song", "Arsonist's Lullabye" and a live version of "To Be Alone"), and a number of festival tour dates and television appearances in the United States. Hozier released his self-titled album, "Hozier" on 19 September 2014. It had five singles including "Take Me to Church", "Work Song", and "From Eden", which were hits on his earlier EPs. On December 2014, it was announced that "Take Me to Church" was nominated at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for Song of the Year in 2015.
In September 2018, he released an EP titled Nina Cried Power and featured the title track as a single, reaching number one on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart. He released his second album, Wasteland, Baby! in March 2019, which debuted atop the Irish Albums Chart and the Billboard 200, and has since been certified gold in the U.S.
Moment's Silence
Hozier Lyrics
Jump to: Line by Line Meaning ↴
With men my mere monstrosity
Alarms are struck I'm sure
I'm sure by sheer atrocity
A cure I know that soothes
The soul, the soul impossibly
A moment's silence when
Me and my babe relaxing
Catching manic rhapsody
All reason flown, as God
Looks on in abject apathy
A swollen order means
A prayer in perfect parody
A moment's silence when
My baby puts her mouth on me
When the meaning's gone
There is clarity
And the reason comes
In the common tongue
In you lovin' me
And it's easy, darling
I don't need a remedy
And the reason comes
In the common tongue
In you lovin' me
What yields the need for those who lead us oh so morally
Those that would view the sin we do through their deformity
Who view the deed as power's creed is pure authority
This moment's silence when my baby
Puts her mouth on me
Since it's all been gone
To it's reckoning
Then the reason comes
In the common tongue
In you lovin' me
We begged for some
Now we lovingly
Let the reason come
In the common tongue
In you lovin' me (woo)
Like a heathen clung
To the harmony
Let the reason come
To the common tongue
Of you lovin' me
It's a silent night upon the rosary
Let the reason come
In the common tongue
In you lovin' me
When stunted hammers place
When ineffective actions are taken
With men my mere monstrosity
With men, I am seen as a strange and monstrous figure
Alarms are struck I'm sure
I am certain that alarms are being sounded
I'm sure by sheer atrocity
I am certain due to the sheer horror of the situation
A cure I know that soothes
I know of a remedy that brings comfort
The soul, the soul impossibly
The soul, beyond all logic or possibility
A moment's silence when
A brief period of silence when
My baby puts her mouth on
My beloved kisses me passionately
Me and my babe relaxing
Me and my beloved are unwinding and taking it easy
Catching manic rhapsody
Experiencing a euphoric state of mind
All reason flown, as God
All logic and rationality abandoned, as if even God
Looks on in abject apathy
Observes with complete indifference
A swollen order means
An inflated sense of authority implies
A prayer in perfect parody
A prayer that is a mockery of true devotion
When the meaning's gone
When the significance is lost
There is clarity
There is a clear understanding
And the reason comes
And the explanation emerges
In the common tongue
In a language everyone can understand
In you lovin' me
In the act of you loving me
And it's easy, darling
And it is effortless, my love
I don't need a remedy
I do not require a cure
What yields the need for those who lead us oh so morally
What justifies the necessity of those who claim to lead us morally
Those that would view the sin we do through their deformity
Those who judge our sins based on their own shortcomings
Who view the deed as power's creed is pure authority
Who see actions as a means to exert power and authority
This moment's silence when my baby
This brief moment of silence when my beloved
Puts her mouth on me
Kisses me passionately
Since it's all been gone
Since it has all disappeared
To its reckoning
To its inevitable consequences
Then the reason comes
Then the understanding arises
In the common tongue
In a language everyone can understand
In you lovin' me
In the act of you loving me
We begged for some
We pleaded for a certain something
Now we lovingly
Now we lovingly embrace
Let the reason come
Allow the explanation to come forth
In the common tongue
In a language everyone can understand
In you lovin' me (woo)
In the act of you loving me (woo)
Like a heathen clung
Like an uncivilized person holding on tightly
To the harmony
To the peaceful balance
Let the reason come
Allow the explanation to come forth
To the common tongue
To a language everyone can understand
Of you lovin' me
In the act of you loving me
It's a silent night upon the rosary
It is a quiet, contemplative night while praying the rosary
Let the reason come
Allow the explanation to come forth
In the common tongue
In a language everyone can understand
In you lovin' me
In the act of you loving me

Hearing Hozier explain that the song is about oral sex, and about the contrast of the relationship between this and power gave a whole different understanding of the lyrics.,
@claudetterendon6516
it's wrong! Hozier explain that some PEOPLE believe that and this is a wrong interpretation. This song is about found the way to be connect with the source of love and clarity.
@MusicLover-sw3br
He has a YouTube explaining the song;
Songs are always open to interpretation.
