From a first single in 1979, the group successfully combined a pop rock and power pop (and sometimes, a blues rock) influenced backing with harmony side-vocals and Lewis' strident voice, and the band had numerous hit songs during the 1980s and early 1990s. These include "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time" (both of which were featured in the film "Back to the Future"), "I Want a New Drug", "Doin' It All (For My Baby)", "Do You Believe in Love?" "Hip to Be Square", "Stuck With You", and "Jacob's Ladder". Huey Lewis shared three Grammy awards, an American Music Award, and a People's Choice Award along with several artists for his role singing the 1985 charity song "We Are the World" as well.

If You Really Love MeYou
Huey Lewis & The News Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I know you think that I'm so cruel
But what about me, what am I supposed to do
Just stay home, stay home and watch TV
(Chorus)
If you really love me you let me
If you really love me you let me
If you love me you'll let me go
I can see that you don't really believe me
You think you should be able to do what you wanna do
Well why should I let you make an idiot of me
Anyway is that all you can do is say
(Repeat Chorus)
The lyrics of Huey Lewis and The News's song If You Really Love Me You'll Let Me are about a relationship in which one partner feels like they are being cheated and lied to. The singer expresses their frustration at their partner's behavior, indicating that they are not willing to be treated poorly. The chorus emphasizes the singer's desire for their partner to show their love by letting them go, rather than trying to control and upset them.
The lyrics suggest that the singer has reached a breaking point in the relationship and is no longer willing to tolerate mistreatment. They feel that their partner is not taking their feelings into account, and is only concerned with their own desires. By asking for their freedom, the singer is taking a stand for their own well-being and showing that they value themselves enough to demand respect.
