I'm in Love with Steffi Graf
Hugh Laurie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's got eyes like diamonds,
Hair like twisted gold.
When she looks up to me,
I feel my blood run cold
Now,I don't care if people laugh (A-ha)
I'm in love with Steffi Graf

I watched her all last summer;
I watched her every day
She knew that I was with her,
She didn't have to say
She can run, but she can't hide
She knows I feel deep down inside..

That Steffi is an angel
But she folds her wings
And walks like you and me
She's extremely good at tennis
On any kind of surface there might be

Clay or grass
She'll flay your ass
And when she hits that topspin second serve
I think I know the meaning of love

Eastbourne never was a favorite
The outside courts were damp
She had a hamstring problem
And recurring muscle cramp

But she dug deep and won it just the same
My angel never lost a service game
But now, a shadow in the distance
A girl with ponytails
Sixteen and full of hunger
The end of Steffi's trail
I can't wait for her defeat
I fetch a knife and take my seed

'Cause Steffi is a goddess
My love for her, it knows no bounds
I'd kill to make her happy,
Or just to get her through the early rounds

Kill or maim
It's just a game
But if I had another life, I'd chose
To come back as one of Steffi's shoes
'Cause Steffi is an angel

But she folds her wings
And walks like you and me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hugh Laurie's song "I'm in Love with Steffi Graf" depict the singer's infatuation with the legendary tennis player, Steffi Graf. The singer highlights Steffi's beauty by comparing her eyes to diamonds and her hair to twisted gold. When she looks at him, he feels a shiver down his spine, indicating the depth of his emotions.

The song suggests that the singer has been following Steffi's career closely, watching her every day during the summer. There is an unspoken connection between them, as she knows he is there supporting her without needing to express it. The lyrics also emphasize Steffi's exceptional tennis skills, describing her abilities on various playing surfaces such as clay and grass. Her topspin second serve is particularly significant to the singer as it represents his understanding of true love.

The song takes a dark turn towards the end, hinting at the singer's obsession with Steffi. The mention of Eastbourne and the difficulties she faced with injuries portrays her as a warrior who overcomes obstacles. However, the lyrics also imply that the singer seeks satisfaction in her defeat, suggesting a twisted desire for control and possession. He fantasizes about causing harm, demonstrating the extremes of his obsession.

Despite these disturbing thoughts, the singer acknowledges Steffi's relatability. She may be an angel in her exceptional talent, but she ultimately walks and faces challenges just like everyone else. The song ends with a declaration of the singer's willingness to do anything for Steffi, even resorting to violence if it meant pleasing her or ensuring her success. This juxtaposition of love and obsession makes "I'm in Love with Steffi Graf" a haunting and introspective piece.

Thank goodness for the series House M.D. Introducing Hugh Laurie to the states. Otherwise I would never have known about the vast amount of acting, comedy and immense talent that he have.

EverNumb

He also wrote a book "The Gun Seller" I read it before I knew who he was.
It came out in the 90's before House M.D. aired.
I can recommend it if you like espionage thrillers with a bit of humor.
