In "Déjame Decirte," Ile challenges an oppressive force by declaring her strength and resilience. She asserts that, despite any threats or intimidation, she will not surrender. She then describes how she operates in contrast to her oppressor, who juggles lies while she performs acrobatics with the truth. Ile states that there is no point in being in someone's sights if that person does not know how to shoot. The metal in her voice has its shine, and she possesses all that matters. She has honed her fear to a sharp edge, and her courage is cutting.
Ile also sings about her journey into the unknown. She unties herself so that she can move freely without getting tangled. Like a wrestler, she does not need a shield – she goes chest to chest with whatever comes her way. The good things in her life are with her, while negative energy rolls off her. Ile then talks about someone trying to drag her down in their currents, but she stands firm while they wobble.
"Déjame Decirte" is a single off Ile's sophomore album, "Almadura," set to release in September 2019. The song was produced by Ismael Cancel, Ile's brother and former Calle 13 bandmate.
Ile's name in its longer form is Ileana Cabra Joglar; she is the younger sister of Residente and Visitante of Calle 13.
The song was inspired by a moment in the studio when Ile expressed frustration by saying, “Déjame decirte,” which translates to “Let me tell you something.” Cancel pushed her to turn that statement into a song.
The metal percussion heard in the song is played on a Swiss cowbell, or Alp horn, and was recorded in Switzerland.
The song features a guest appearance by Puerto Rican salsa legend Eddie Palmieri.
"Déjame Decirte" was released along with a music video directed by César Berrios, featuring Ile as a boxer training to face her oppressor.
Ile was named Best New Artist at the 2017 Latin Grammy Awards.
The album "Almadura" is named after a combination of the words "alma" (soul) and "armadura" (armor), representing the spiritual and physical strength Ile draws on in her music.
Ile cites her mother and grandmother as important influences, both of whom were poets and activists.
Before starting her solo music career, Ile performed with the Puerto Rican alternative band Calle 13.
