During the band's early years, In Flames had a varying group of musicians recording with them, including many session musicians. By the release of Colony (1999), the group had established a stable lineup. Their sixth studio album Reroute to Remain (2002) showed the band moving toward a newer style of music that moved further away from melodic death metal and closer to alternative metal. This decision was criticized by fans of the group's heavier metal sound; however, it increased the band's mainstream audience and bolstered their album sales. As of 2008, In Flames has sold over two million records worldwide.
Since the band's inception, In Flames have released thirteen studio albums, three EPs, and two live DVDs, their latest release being their thirteenth studio album I, the Mask in 2019. In Flames has been nominated for three Grammis Awards. They won two of these nominations; one for Soundtrack to Your Escape (2004) in the "Hard Rock/Metal of the Year" category, and one nomination for their following album Come Clarity (2006) in the same category.

In Flames Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've been stumbling through reality
I play my symphony in reverse
In search for that special path
Be gentle to the tear in this I
Lonesome arms, lost its wings again
So I can laugh at my mistakes
I can see the end from here
From this perspective it looks kind of silly
Satellites and astronauts
Tell me there are greater things ahead
Make me feel like a man
A silent cry from the middle of hell
I - the irony - I promise, I'll be mature
So please, invite me to your shelter again
Been hiding since I heard "never"
Take me back to yesterday, I need to grow
Steal my mask and make me pay
I need a new skin
I'm going insane
The opening lines of In Flames's song Satellites and Astronauts expresses the singer's sense of disorientation since the day of his departure. He finds himself stumbling through reality as he tries to find his way back on the right path. The singer appears to be lost in his thoughts, reflecting on some mistakes he had made in the past. The lyrics convey his desire to escape reality and find solace in the romanticized idea of a trip to the moon. He hopes that by going to the moon, he can laugh at his mistakes from a new perspective.
The lyrics further develop the theme of the singer's desire to escape reality by alluding his desire to the greater things in the universe. He says, "Satellites and astronauts tell me there are greater things ahead." It is as if he is seeking affirmation that there is more to life than just his current experiences. He longs to feel like a man again and to be able to grow from his past experiences. He feels that he needs a new skin, as if he wants to shed his current identity and be reborn.
Overall, the lyrics of Satellites and Astronauts convey a sense of alienation and a search for meaning. The singer wishes to escape reality and find a new perspective, yet at the same time, he is seeking affirmation that there is more to life. The song follows a steady pace, using a combination of distorted guitars, intricate drumming, and melodic vocals that perfectly conveys the mood of the lyrics.
