Alongside At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity, In Flames pioneered the genres known as Swedish death metal and melodic death metal.

During the band's early years, In Flames had a varying group of musicians recording with them, including many session musicians. By the release of Colony (1999), the group had established a stable lineup. Their sixth studio album Reroute to Remain (2002) showed the band moving toward a newer style of music that moved further away from melodic death metal and closer to alternative metal. This decision was criticized by fans of the group's heavier metal sound; however, it increased the band's mainstream audience and bolstered their album sales. As of 2008, In Flames has sold over two million records worldwide.

Since the band's inception, In Flames have released thirteen studio albums, three EPs, and two live DVDs, their latest release being their thirteenth studio album I, the Mask in 2019. In Flames has been nominated for three Grammis Awards. They won two of these nominations; one for Soundtrack to Your Escape (2004) in the "Hard Rock/Metal of the Year" category, and one nomination for their following album Come Clarity (2006) in the same category.

Funny, I relate this to a past failed relationship as well. I felt that it was about being in disarray after a breakup or something, and the feeling I'd get when I'd tell myself to take a step back from it all, to "laugh at my mistakes." Great song though. In Flames we trust.

Personally I love every album made by In Flames, Each time I have taken off the plastic wrap, opened the CD case and put it into my stereo I have found it impossible to stop playing for hours. Each one get's about the same amount of play as the other, although I have to say this is my fav In Flames track. Saw them at Graspop 2006 just after Sweden had been beaten by germany in the world cup, no one likes loosing to the germans and I think this made them play with more passion than I have seen

One of my favourite things to do is listen to everything from Lunar Strain / Subterranean until this album, Clayman. What an epic journey. I still enjoy most of In Flames' new albums but this stuff was truly special.

I remember buying the CD, coming home throwing it in the player... and being completely blown away. Musta listened the entire CD 4 times in a row. I remember thinking at the time that I couldnt remember the last time I heard a CD that was that good, front to back. Equal parts brutality, musicianship, melody - amazing songs, amazing band. I agree with Uberalex90 though - I much prefer their older stuff. Clayman and Colony are my favorites for sure. I stopped buying their stuff a few years ago... but I keep coming back to this album and Colony.

I listen to In Flames like 7 years now, and everytime they realease a new album, i listen to it... hoping somehow they return to their old style... Anyway, this song is definetely one of their best in this album, with Pinball Map, Only For The Weak, Clayman, Another Day In Quicksand... shit man the entire album is gold.

I’m 28 years old and i lived here in hatred and hid in the darkness growing up because I wouldn’t conform. I came to realize that you either commit suicide or live life how you want to live it. I began using my anger for putting myself in positive situations. I found giving back to your loved ones and making them happy or just random people is what got my out of that place in my life. I now have people willing to do the same for me and I love it. I started listening to in flames when gh3 came out and I was obsessed but now I occasionally come back and marvel at the lyrical and instrumental genius of this band.

Clayman is by far my favourite In Flames album, with Satellites and Astronauts being my favourite song by them, its so beautiful and emotional. However, I really enjoy the album Sounds of a Playground Fading, Deliver Us and Darker Times are two absolutely brilliant songs for example. Clayman is definitely the pinnacle of In Flames albums but it is pretty unfair to label their 'older stuff' as good and their 'new stuff' as bad, In Flames have been making fantastic songs their entire career.

I wish they made the intro of the song longer, and make it instrumental. No distortion either just slow clean riffs in progression. The intro actually reminds me of the Diablo 2 soundtrack.

This is a very good song of one of the best albums of In Flames (for me the best with The Jester Race). When I listen to the last 3 albums of In Flames, I feel depressed, they are so bad (with a few good songs)... In Flames lost their way in 2002.
