Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band formed in 1991, based in Calabasas, California. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and DJ Chris Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include Gavin Koppel (a.k.a. DJ Lyfe) (turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) (bass). The band's name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, comes in the night and has sex with women while they are sleeping; it seduces them in their dreams The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose "Incubus" almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it. "We really didn't want to rape women in their sleep. But, we were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it," says the band.
Incubus has received both critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single "Drive" and their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009, accompanied by a tour of the United States, Japan and Canada. The band's most recent album, 8, was released on April 21st, 2017.

And gave back a parking lot
We got about fifteen minutes to go
Before this audience
Starts throwing tomatoes, yeah
It?s not the end, there is more show
We got about fifteen minutes to go
Survived the plague, floated the flood
Just peeked our heads above the mud
No one?s immune, deafening bells
My God, will we survive ourselves?
I'm not an alarmist
But someone should break the glass
And pull that red T-lever down
To get their attention
Start lobbing the light grenades
That burst and blind them with the truth
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth
Survived the plague, floated the flood
Just peeked our heads above the mud
No one?s immune, deafening bells
My God, will we survive ourselves?
Survived the plague, floated the flood
Just peeked out heads above the mud
Wipe off your face, we've come this far
Come on, remember who you are
Survived the plague, floated the flood
Just peeked our heads above the mud
No one?s immune, deafening bells
My God
Survived the plague, floated the flood
Just peeked out heads above the mud
Wipe off your face, we've come this far
Come on, remember who you are
Come on, remember who you are
Come on, remember who you are
Remember, remember
Come on, remember who you are
Remember, remember
Come on, remember who you are
The song "Light Grenades" by Incubus showcases the band's lyrical depth in discussing societal issues that affect humanity. The opening verse conveys the message of how humanity has irreversibly destroyed nature for its own selfish interests and trade-off the beauty of nature with parking lots. The song's protagonists seem to be at a concert, and the artists have about 15 minutes left to sway the audience with their music. But, when the crowd starts pelting tomatoes, it portrays the futility of entertainment during the current state of society. The song goes on to talk about how humanity has survived deadly plagues and floods but still faces the impending catastrophe of extinction caused by environmental negligence and global warming. The line "My God, will we survive ourselves?" highlights the dark, grim thoughts the singer ponders over society's state.
The next part of the song, "I'm not an alarmist, but someone should break the glass, and pull that red T-lever down" expresses how the current state of society demands our attention and how we must act urgently to make things right; otherwise, we are at risk of collapsing under our ignorance. The line "Start lobbing the light grenades, that burst and blind them with the truth" suggests that we need to shock people out of their reverie by making them aware of the gravity of the situation. The song concludes with the lines "Come on, remember who you are" multiple times, encouraging the audience to remember and realize their potential to make a positive difference.

No one is safe and we're being warned of impending danger
My God, will we survive ourselves?
Can we as a species survive our own destructive tendencies?
I'm not an alarmist
I'm not trying to cause unnecessary panic

To make people aware of the seriousness of the situation
Start lobbing the light grenades
