Always You
Ingrid Michaelson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I don't complain
'Cause I wait for you
And I don't feel pain
You're like Novocaine
And I got you
It was always you
Time and again
I thought that the end
Was just around the bend
But you showed me there's more
I got more in store
And you got me
It was always you
It was always you
It was always you
It was always you
The lyrics of Ingrid Michaelson's song "Always You" seem to be about waiting for someone despite all adversity. Michaelson sings about waiting in the rain, something that could be seen as uncomfortable and unenjoyable. Yet, she doesn't complain because she's waiting for the person she's been waiting for all along. She compares this feeling to Novocaine, a pain reliever that numbs the pain. Michaelson feels no pain when waiting for this special person because they make everything feel alright. The chorus repeats, "it was always you," emphasizing the idea that the person she's waiting for has always been the one for her.
The second verse further explains the depths of Michaelson's devotion to the person she's waiting for. She explains that she's always thought the end was coming, yet this person has shown her that there's more in store. And she's not alone, this person has got her back. Despite all the difficulties and challenges that have come their way, this person has been there all along. Again, the chorus repeats, "it was always you," and ends the song on this profound realization.

I'm listening to this song while it's raining in the background, so it's perfect. "I wait in the rain, but I don't complain. 'Cause I wait... For you." The only flaw to this song is that it isn't long enough and I have to press the repeat button more often, but it's SO worth it. ;)

Parenthood brought me here. I just started crying AGAIN. Best tv show ever. For me, because it portrayed the exact opposite of my family (manipulative and not always honest with each other, both from my moms and dads sides) and what family should be: amongst the difficulties of life, it should be the thing that unites... I still don't know why this show hasn't been a big thing. LOVE HANK/SARAH!

This show is about a different family. In general, is too hard to have those conversations they had about many subjects. Hope your family is ok. Greetings from Brasil.

Found this by looking around after I stumbled on The Way I Am and keep coming back to it. One of the most haunting bits of melody and sketch I've heard.
