You And I
Ingrid Michaelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't you worry, there my honey
We might not have any money
But we've got our love to pay the bills

Maybe I think you're cute and funny
Maybe I wanna do what bunnies do with you
If you know what I mean
Oh, let's get rich and buy our parents
Homes in the South of France
Let's get rich and give everybody nice sweaters
And teach them how to dance
Let's get rich and build our house on a mountain
Making everybody look like ants
From way up there, you and I, you and I

Well you might be a bit confused
And you might be a little bit bruised
But baby how we spoon like no one else
So I will help you read those books
If you will soothe my worried looks
And we will put the lonesome on the shelf

Oh, let's get rich and buy our parents
Homes in the South of France
Let's get rich and give everybody nice sweaters
And teach them how to dance
Let's get rich and build our house on a mountain
Making everybody look like ants
From way up there, you and I, you and I

Oh, let's get rich and buy our parents
Homes in the South of France
Let's get rich and give everybody nice sweaters
And teach them how to dance
Let's get rich and build our house on a mountain

Making everybody look like ants
From way up there, you and I, you and I

Overall Meaning

The song "You and I" by Ingrid Michaelson is a sweet and whimsical love song that showcases the simplicity of love. The lyrics convey that even without money, as long as two people have love, they can pay for their bills. The song talks about the things two people can do together and how they can make an effort to make the people around them happy. The chorus explains the dream of becoming wealthy and being able to provide luxuries to their loved ones, like buying their parents homes in the South of France, giving them nice sweaters, sharing the gift of dance, and building their own house on a mountain.

The lyrics in the verse describe the intimacy between the couple as they cuddle and read books together, comforting each other during difficult times. The song plays with the idea of the unrealistic dream of being rich, but also emphasizes the partnership and love that two people can share, no matter their financial status. The lyrics use humor in lines like "Maybe I wanna do what bunnies do with you, If you know what I mean" and "And we will put the lonesome on the shelf," which give the song a lighthearted feel.

Overall, "You and I" is a song that celebrates the simplicity of love and the dreams that two people can share together, despite any challenges or financial limitations they may face.

Best Tardy

I'm a 15 year old boy and I went to an Ingrid Michaelson concert a couple months back. I held up a sign that "You and I should sing You and I together." When I got in, she pointed to me and said: "I saw your sign from inside my van. God, I hope that doesn't make me a stalker!" Literally the best moment of my life! <3

Please feel free to tell if you still feel the same way. Ingrid is one of the main forces to keep me going. I hope she does the same to you.

I absolutely love this song. The ukulele makes it a sweet and warm feeling and Ingrid makes the song great whith happuness romance, and a little bit of silliness.
