You obviously haven't listened to the video.
The radar and the computer calculate the trajectory of the rocket and the iron dome battery is activated only if the rocket is about to hit inside the perimeter the Iron Dome is guarding, which is usually a city center.

So if the rocket falls outside the perimeter, ie. outside city limits, the battery does not even shoot the intercepting missile.

So on the 1000 rockets shot in this particular example, around 220 were actually going to fall on city centers which means that the 200 hit makes it a 90% + success rate.

This is the way to calculate the success rate of the Iron Dome because this is the way it works.

Now I agree that it is indeed problematic to shoot a 30 000 $ missile to intercept a cheap 300 $ rocket. It is absolutely counter productive financially, but in the meantime, it's the best we have and it does saves lives.

That is why we are working on a laser guided interceptor which would work in tandem with the iron dome.

Also the Iron only shoots at target that are going to hit civilian areas so of those 1000 missiles most probably didn't head towards them so weren't fired on. But I also it does miss

A patriot missile can shoot down mid range to long range missiles like scuds, but it can also lock on fighter jets and change its course live while "chasing" it depending on every move the pilot makes. An Iron Dome missile has just some data from ground about a ballistic trajectory of a non guided rocket and just goes there. Sure it can adjust a bit, but not that much. That's also why a Patriot missile cost around 3 millions USD while an Iron Dome missile cost around 80 thousands USD. But a Patriot system would never be able to shoot down tiny targets like mortar or qassam rockets, and even if it could work a little bit, the idea of throwing a 3 millions dollar spaceship to a handmade flying explosive hookah is ridiculous

@TallenTV first of all, it is somewhat new. Secondly, the US doesn't "have this for a long time". It's an Israeli-invention, that right now no one else has on this level. Yeah there's the Patriot missile, maybe this is what you're referring to, but it's not on the same level as the Iron dome, and definitely not on the level of fire rate and amount, with the same level of precision.

That's why there were talks of the USA buying a few from Israel, though in the end they preferred a new, not-proven and battle tested, American system because they prefer pride over American lives. Oh well.

Secondly, it's not the first instance at all of heavy use, the first one was Pillar of Defense back in 2012, though the first big use was at Protective Edge from 2014.

@Rush The patriot missile was designed as a SAM and is meant to target airplanes, it can also target ICBMs but not very well. It can't handle the type of rockets/short range missiles that Iron Dome does.
Iron Dome deals with rockets with a minimum range of about 4 km (about 2.5 miles) and top range of 100+ km. Israel also implements a system called David's Sling for medium range missiles (100+ mi), and Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 for ICBMs.
A new laser based system is supposed to come into operation soon that handles mortar fire and other very short range rockets.

Amazing system. Every time I see it, I think "All the people wondering why the casualty rates between Israel and Hamas and hapless Palestinians is so large... it's partially because Israel has made systems like this to defend themselves." The Israeli casualty figures, I have no idsa what they would be without Israeli technology. Good to hear that the US will be acquiring some experience with these as well.

for the people who don't understand why at the time Israel shot only 200 missiles after the Hamas shooting over 1000, its because the system can detect and understand where the missile is gonna be shot at. If the area is with no people / buildings and empty (like the ocean or deserted areas) there is no need in destroying them.
but obviously everyone needs to go and hide in bomb shelters because when the Israeli missile explodes with Hamas's missile there are little bits that are still really dangerous and its better to no walk outside when one of those bits can hit you or your property.

You should mention that the Iron dome is only one of the missile defense systems Israel has developed. It's made for short-ranged targets, but Israel also developed other missile defense systems such as "David's Sling" (aka Magic Wand) and "Arrow 3" missiles - for different types of aerial threats.

@zikzein I didn't say a word on present conflict, i only brought some history because you talk about the "maps" (palestine shrinking throughout the year), i think it's important to understand the why and how because people often mistook israel claimed everything by force and unprovoked. As for the eviction you see on the news last month, it's actually a long legal dispute over an area in the suburb of Jerusalem. Long story short, it used to be under Jordan occupany in mid 1900s, and the Jordanian govt granted legal title over the lands to some jews and palestinians who lived there/invest. The problem is that some part of the land is already owned by mostly palestinians way before Jordan came, and these people also had the legal titles from the previous govt (palestine). And for some reasons they don't get the legal titles from jordanian govt. After jordan left, the land is on dispute, so israeli court came up with a solution that the former land owners (mostly palestinians) hv to pay rent to the current land owners (palestinians & jews) if they wish to stay. And now, israel wants to build an apartment in that disputed area (i forgot the name), so compensation would be given to the second land owners. The biggest problem is that some of the first land owners didn't pay rent, claim that the land is theirs as they've been living there for generations, wouldn't get compensation, and still they would be evicted by either the government or the second land owners because they don't have the newest legal title (the viral video that's been circulating is probably the 2nd land owner vs the 1st land owner). It's actually pretty unfair, the govt should also give them compensation imo. But no, the issue is not politically motivated. Some of the second land owners are actually palestinians...

Absolutely incredible technology. I know people like to talk about the asymmetry in casualties between the Palestinians and Israel but the simple fact is that many, many people would die if this system was not constructed, and that’s an incredible legacy for the engineers who worked on this.

It's actually amazing how this was one of the least problems we had back there.
Thousands of missiles were thrown at us (4000+) at 2-3 weeks, meanwhile a whole city gone rouge with the police most of the time doing nothing. There were dozens of clashes at that streets there, fist fights, even a few fire fights between the Arabs and the Jews. The Arabs there got out of control for weeks. And that's just Lod (though it was the worst situation in the conflict. The military had to step in to try and maintain the city, and that's after the mayor literally said "we've lost control of the city, Bibi, please bring us the IDF to help". You can even read about in on Wikipedia in English....).

There were other places too like Jerusalem, Tell Aviv a bit, Bat-Yam, Acre, and more.

The truth is that Iron Dome saved many many lives on both sides of the conflict. Of course if thousands of rockets were fired and only about 10-20% got through the defense of iron dome, there would have been many deaths on the israeli side without it.

But also Israel would have been forced to make a much larger military operation - because the public pressure to defend itself would be much strongen under such circumstances, maybe there would even be an invasion, and many more palestinians would have been killed and injured as a result.

I don't think they explicity said it couldn't be done.. you might be a fool when it comes to operational costs. A group of angry Palestines working in there basement (Hamas) can easily make homemade rockets and fire them at israeli for under $100. In contrast 1 Iron Done Battery costs $50 Million Dollars and each intercepting missile costs $50,000. To bad they couldn't integrate the system with a Phalanx/Goalkeeper CIWS, each round costs $30 a shell.

Incredibly smart that it determines the trajectory of the incoming rocket and knows whether it is headed towards a populated area. No sense wasting a $40K defense missile to shoot down a rocket that is not going to threaten anyone. I'm sure the Chinese would appreciate such thriftiness.

A magnificent defensive counter. Extremely expensive when compared to the cheap rockets it intercepts, but life is precious. I wish that kind of thinking would extend to how others are treated. Instead of perpetuating the cycle of violence with heavy escalation.

When you say "Iron Dome," it is exactly what is sounds like: Iron. They say it is the best and the greatest. But we both know they cannot shoot down nuclear missiles. So what are we talking about here? The best missile defense system in the world doesn't belong to the US-Israel alliance. Don't fool yourself.
