He was born in Nottingham to musical parents who separated when he was young. His father, David Bugg, was a nurse and his mother worked in sales, both parents having previously made recordings. He grew up in the Clifton council estate of Nottingham and started playing guitar at the age of 12 after being introduced to the instrument by his uncle Mark. He attended Farnborough School Technology College in Clifton. He has described a formative musical moment when, aged 12, he heard Don McLean's "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" on an episode of The Simpsons. He was enrolled in a music technology course but, by the age of 16, he had dropped out and was writing and performing his own songs.

While we figure it out
Many leave on the Sunday morning
'Cause I like tough and we break up
It's on, it's on
Never mind what you said last week, babe
I forgive what you've done
We go out, we lay in the dark
It's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on
It's getting old and it's all your fault
Because I won't do what I'm told
It's makes my mind meet bitter salt
It's on, it's on
Shall we go to the pictures, darling
Shall we go see what's on
Just to argue about everything
'Cause when we're out, you and me shout
It's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on
It's getting old and it's all your fault
Because I won't do what I'm told
It's makes my mind meet bitter salt
It's on
It's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on
It's getting to know that it's all your fault
Because I won't do what I'm told
It's makes my mind meet bitter salt
It's on, it's on, it's on
It's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on, it's on
"Bitter Salt" by Jake Bugg is a song that delves into the tumultuous nature of a relationship. The lyrics depict a couple who constantly argue and break up, but keep coming back together. The singer seems to be frustrated with their partner's behavior, yet unable to fully let go. The repetition of "It's on" throughout the song emphasizes the cyclical nature of their relationship, where they constantly find themselves in the same pattern of conflict and reconciliation.
The lyrics suggest a sense of resignation and bitterness towards the situation. The line "It's getting old and it's all your fault" reveals the singer's frustration with their partner's actions, blaming them for the repetitive cycle. However, there is also a sense of personal agency, as the singer asserts "Because I won't do what I'm told." This could imply a resistance to conforming to societal expectations or succumbing to their partner's demands.
