Last learned how to play piano as child, switching to bass as a teenager. He joined Hans-Gunther Oesterreich's Radio Bremen Dance Orchestra in 1946, when he was 17 years old. In 1948, he became the leader of the Becker-Last Ensemble, which performed for seven years. During that time, he was voted as the best bassist in the country by a German jazz poll for three consecutive years, from 1950-1952. After the disbandment of the Becker-Last Ensemble, he became the in-house arranger for Polydor Records, as well as for a number of European radio stations. For the next decade, he helped arrange hits for artists like Helmut Zacharias and Caterina Valente.
Last released his first album "Non-Stop Dancing" in 1965. The record of brief renditions of popular songs, all tied together by an insistent dance beat and joyous crowd noises. It was a hit and helped make him a major European star. Over the next four decades, Last has released over 190 records, including several more volumes of Non-Stop Dancing. On these records, he varies his formula by adding different songs from different countries and genres, as well as guest performers like Richard Clayderman and Astrud Gilberto.
Though his concerts and albums are consistently successful — especially in England, where he had 52 hit albums between 1967-1986, which made him second to Elvis Presley in terms of number of charting records — he has only had two hit singles with "The Seduction," the theme from American Gigolo (1980) and Biscaya from the album "Biscaya".
He has won numerous polls and prizes, for example Billboard magazine's "Star of the year" trophy in 1976, and has been honored for his lifework with the German ECHO prize in 1994.
The song "The Lonely Shepherd", written by Last and performed by Gheorghe Zamfir and the James Last Orchestra, was featured in the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's film "Kill Bill Vol. 1" (2003).
Personally, he divides his time between Florida and Germany. He gives much credit to his wife and son, who helps with the music.

Then just walk away
We don't have tomorrow
But we had yesterday
(Hey!)
Wasn't it me who said that
Nothing good's gonna last forever?
Let's just be glad for the time together?
It must've been hard to tell me
That you've given all you had to give
I can understand you're feeling that way
Everybody's got their life to live
Well, I can say goodbye in the cold morning light
But I can't watch love die in the warmth of the night
If I've got to be strong
Don't you know I need to have tonight when you're gone?
'Till you go I need to lie here and think about
The last time that you'll touch me in the morning
Then just close the door
Leave me as you found me, empty like before
(Hey!)
Wasn't it yesterday
We used to laugh at the wind behind us?
Didn't we run away and hope
That time wouldn't try to find us (Didn't we run)
Didn't we take each other
To a place where no one's ever been?
Yeah, I really need you near me tonight
'Cause you'll never take me there again
Let me watch you go
With the sun in my eyes
We've seen how love can grow
Now we'll see how it dies
If I've got to be strong
Don't you know I need to have tonight when you're gone?
'Till you go I need to hold you until the time
Your hands reach out and touch me in the morning
(Mornings where blue and gold and we could feel one another living)
Then just walk away
(We walked with a dream to hold and we could take what the world was giving)
We don't have tomorrow,
(There's no tomorrow here, there's only love and the time to chase it)
But we had yesterday
(But yesterday's gone my love, there's only now and it's time to face it)
Touch me in the morning...
The lyrics to James Last & Horea Crishan's song A Morning In Cornwall are about the end of a relationship. It speaks of a couple who used to be deeply in love, but now have come to the realization that their love is coming to an end. The first stanza speaks of a physical relationship that is coming to a close. The singer is asking his lover to touch him one last time in the morning before walking away, leaving their relationship in the past.
The second stanza speaks of reminiscing about their past when they used to be happy together, laughing and running away from their problems. However, they know that it is impossible to go back to those times, and they must face the fact that their love has died. The chorus speaks of the singer's need for tonight and how he wants to hold onto his lover. The last time they touch in the morning is the end, with no tomorrow but the memories of yesterday. It is a poignant celebration of a love that has come to an end.

Sevmiştim bende bir zamanlar
Ayrıldık saçmasapanca ve sebepsizce
Tamda unuttuğum düşüncelerdeydim her şeyi
Aklıma bile gelmez olmuştu sanki onca yaşananlar
Öylece geçti uzunca bir zaman.
Gençliğimle beraber yıllar yılı gitti peşin sıra
Hayata sarıldım onsuzda oluyordu heralde
Belkide ben öyle zannetmek istiyordum.
Yine sıradan bir geceydi yorgun ve uykuluydum.
Bir rüyayla Sızladı kalbimin taa derinlikleri
Gerçek olmadığını biliyordum gördüklerimin
Uyandım aniden tarifsiz duygularla
Herşeyi yeniden yaşamış gibiydim
İki hayat arasında sıkışıp kaldım bir anda
çokta denedim kafamdan silip atmayı
Unutamadımki onca gençlik hatırâlarını
Anılar Bir bir canlandı gözlerimde.
Nasılda dalıp gitmişim uzaklara
Severken ayrılmak ne de zormuş meğerse
unuttum demek kendini kandırmakmış sadece.
..............Unutamadım ..........
......Anladım çok geç......
