Half the Man
Jamiroquai Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yesterday I was
Half the man I used to be
Oh, maybe that's because
You're the other half of me
Like the spring in bloom
The summer of our love is soon
Every bird will sing
The melody of our love tune

Send down from above
Unconditionally love
Likened to a flower
Stronger love grows by the hour
Stormy weather days
Make us go our separate ways
Where our love was so at ease
Now you got me down on my knees

Yesterday I was
Brighter than the morning sun
Now my love is lost
And lonely days have just begun
A solitary chair
For a silent love affair

A king lost his throne
And now he sits alone

Overall Meaning

"Half the Man" is a song by British funk and acid jazz band Jamiroquai. The song, from the band’s second album “The Return of the Space Cowboy” released in 1994, is an emotional ballad that explores the theme of lost love. The lyrics are delivered in a melancholic tone, creating an atmosphere that is both poignant and captivating.

The first verse of the song sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics. It speaks of how the singer feels like he is only half the man he used to be, which is a direct reference to the loss of his love. He explains that this feeling occurred because his significant other was the other half of him. In essence, a significant part of him was lost when the relationship ended.

The second verse describes the beauty and passion once shared between the lovers. The lyrics compare their love to the spring in bloom, describing how the summer of their love was soon to follow. The melody of their love tune is confirmed by the singing of the birds in the background. The phrase "Unconditionally love" suggests that the love was pure and unwavering, coming unreservedly from above.

The third and final verse talks about the aftermath of the loss of the relationship. It speaks of the sad days of loneliness and loss, where the love that once existed has become silent and cold. The solo chair and the lost throne signify the loneliness the singer is experiencing, which is a metaphor for his feeling alone in his pain. The singer is longing for his lover, which ultimately reflects the pain and desperation of a relationship that has ended.

I’m a big big fan of Jamiroquai since many many years (probably 30years). And for my wedding, this year, half the man was used for the wedding witnesses entry.
I had the chance to see you several times in concert.
So many thanks Jay Kay and team for these amazing moment since 30years

@Kafelnya

@KINDaf

@@Kafelnya it's a beautiful love song! How can you not see that????? It is PERFECT for a wedding. The first time I heard this song I was thinking, that if I ever got married? This is the first dance song ALL THE WAY!
