I guess I'll treat her right more this time
I'll try not to rely
Try not to rely on the perfect line
And I see no boundaries
Except for the ones I'm in
And I don't expect you to overcome them
For that's my job description
In a world of players and private eyes
Unless you realize this
There's a whole lot you could miss
Do you know which one I am
I am the cigarette smoking man
Once an hour I light the flower
And burn baby burn
When is it your turn
Lord tell me when the sun goes down
Cause I feel much better then anyway
Well I see much much better then anyway
Well I feel exposed
Although I feel at home
Dressed as a black plastic rose
All flowing head shoulders knees and toes
We dance, we dance, we play, we rant and rave
Oh this childlike wildlife is flooring me
Oh this childlike wildlife is flooring me
Early in the morning
Late in the evening
Evening, we kinda get delirious
Breaking from the seriousness
I try not to get disoriented
Having chewed too many up on my side
Is it any wonder how I miss your smile
Is it any wonder how I write
Pages layered upon pages
Which to no one else but me can be accounted for
For this moments sake
I do not become me
For path tunnels or straightaways
I do not watch as often as I should
So instead I sketch my life a comfortable creature
Slow and beautifully
Oh the smell and tastes of the past nights
Well they're still locked up in my gentle jaw
Not that I am wanting them to go
Just that they are
And I'm very much aware
The madness of slow motion as you move your legs to walk
I'm very much aware
Of this madness when you talk
This childlike wildlife is flooring me
Oh this childlike wildlife is flooring me
We dance, we play
Oh lord we rant and rave
We dance and we play always
The song "Childlike" by Jason Mraz is a reflection on the desire to improve oneself and treat others with kindness and understanding. The first verse suggests a commitment to treating someone better this time around and not relying on rehearsed lines. The lyrics acknowledge personal boundaries and the responsibility to overcome them instead of expecting others to do so.
The second verse introduces the idea of living in a world filled with deceitful and curious individuals, symbolized by the "players and private eyes." The lyrics suggest that if one fails to recognize this reality, they may miss out on important truths. The reference to the "cigarette smoking man" implies a mysterious and enigmatic character who indulges in vices but also has a deep understanding of life's complexities.
The chorus expresses a longing for a specific moment, when the sun goes down, suggesting a feeling of contentment and peace at that time. The lyrics also convey a sense of clarity and perception during those moments. The following lines indicate a feeling of vulnerability and exposure, portrayed through the metaphor of being dressed as a black plastic rose, yet feeling at home. The repetition of "we dance, we play, we rant and rave" conveys a sense of joyful abandonment and celebration of life.
The third verse explores the theme of delirium and the need to break free from seriousness. It references past experiences and memories that hold a personal significance. The lyrics imply a writing process wherein the pages are layered upon pages, symbolizing the depth of personal reflection. They also indicate that these musings are only understood by the songwriter.
The fourth verse emphasizes the present moment and the need to appreciate life's small pleasures. It describes a slow and beautiful existence, contrasting with the fast pace of everyday life. The reference to the "madness of slow motion" suggests a heightened awareness and appreciation of simple actions like walking and talking.
The song concludes with a repetition of the chorus and the line "we dance, we play always," reinforcing the idea of embracing the childlike joy and spontaneity inherent in life. Overall, "Childlike" can be interpreted as a call to reconnect with one's innate curiosity, playfulness, and appreciation for the present moment in order to live a more fulfilling life.

Pages layered upon pages
Numerous pages stacked on top of each other
Which to no one else but me can be accounted for
Only I can explain the significance of those pages
For this moments sake
For the sake of this moment
I do not become me
I don't truly become myself

The aroma and flavors of previous nights
Well they're still locked up in my gentle jaw
They are still stored in my tender mouth
Not that I am wanting them to go
Not that I desire for them to fade away
Just that they are
Simply because they exist
And I'm very much aware
And I'm fully conscious
The madness of slow motion as you move your legs to walk
The craziness of perceiving slow movement when you walk
I'm very much aware
I'm highly conscious
Of this madness when you talk
Of this madness that occurs when you speak
This childlike wildlife is flooring me
The innocence and liveliness of life astonishes me
We dance, we play
We engage in dancing, playing
Oh lord we rant and rave
Oh lord, we passionately express our thoughts and emotions
We dance and we play always
We constantly dance and play
