1) Jerry Butler, Jr. (born December 8, 1939 in Sunflower, Mississippi) is an American soul singer also known as "The Ice Man" because of his cool demeanour while singing often intensely emotional lyrics.
Butler was dubbed the "Iceman" by a Philadelphia disc jockey while performing in a Philadelphia theater. However, Butler achieved what eluded many earlier Doo Wop groups during the 1950s and 1960s — longevity. Butler’s solo career had a string of hits, including "He Will Break Your Heart," "Moon River," "Make It Easy On Yourself," "Let It Be Me" (the Everly Brothers classic re-done as a duet with Betty Everett), "Brand New Me," "Ain’t Understanding Mellow," (duet with Brenda Lee Eager), and "Never Gonna Give You Up," followed by two hugely successful albums The Iceman Cometh in 1968 and Ice On Ice in 1970. The Iceman Cometh garnered Butler three Grammy nominations. Jerry Butler further made recordings for Philadelphia International Records in the 80's. His most noted song for the label was "Cooling Out"

My mother said one day
And this is what she had to say
What are you gonna do, child
With those tears in your eyes
(Run) no use trying to tell yourself
(Hide) that you don't love the girl
Take it for what it's worth
(You can't hide)
Go to the end of the Earth
(You can't hide)
You can run, run, run but
Oh, you can't hide from love
What are you gonna say, child
When your heartaches won't go
(Run) you can't tell love to go
(Hide) and come back another day
Try to leave it behind
(You can't hide)
Well, she's still on your mind
(You can't hide)
Run, run, run but you
Can't hide from love
Love is too wide
You can't get around it
It's too high
You can't get over it
Oh, no, you can't get over it
So what are you
Gonna do now, child
You still love her so
(Run) what were you
Thinking of, little boy (hide)
When you let the little girl go
You're gonna find out one day
(You can't hide)
There is no hiding place
(You can't hide)
Run, run, run but you
Can't hide from love
Oh, run (run, run, run)
But you can't hide
(Run, run, run)
Love will be by your side
(Run, run, run)
Cause wherever you go
(Run, run, run)
She will be there I know
The lyrics to Jerry Butler's "You Can Run (But You Can't Hide)" are reminiscent of a mother offering advice to her child who is going through a tough time with love. The use of "child" and "little boy" throughout the song suggests a younger protagonist, who is struggling to come to terms with the emotions associated with a broken heart. The mother's advice is to face the situation and accept the love that is still present, rather than running away from it. She emphasizes that love is a force that cannot be avoided, and while the singer is physically able to run away from the situation, the love will always be present, and eventually, he will have to confront it.
The repetition of the phrase "run, run, run" in the chorus creates a sense of urgency and desperation, highlighting the singer's attempt to avoid the love he still feels. The line "You can run, run, run but oh, you can't hide from love" serves as the central message of the song. Whatever he does, he cannot escape the love he still feels.
Overall, the lyrics to "You Can Run (But You Can't Hide)" are evocative of a coming-of-age story, as a young protagonist struggles with the complicated and often messy emotions that come with love. The mother's advice serves as a reminder that love is a powerful force that cannot be avoided, and no matter how tumultuous it may be, it is ultimately worth embracing.
