I'm Free
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got rid of the shackles that bound me
And the guards who were always around me
Like a bird in the tree
I've found my liberty
And I'm free from the chain gang now

Long ago I was known and respected
Then one day I was falsely suspected
And they put me in chains
Working out in the rains
But I'm free from the chain gang now

I know my mother's poor heart was broken
'Cause she knew that an untruth was spoken
There were tears on the mail
That she sent me in jail
But I'm free from the chain gang now

All the years I was known by a number
Were just years that I spent without slumber
After long years of shame
I have won back my name
And I'm free from the chain gang now

Now I'm going back home to another
She's my sweetheart who's waiting with mother
And I'll dry all the tears

That's been shedding for years
'Cause I'm free from the chain gang now

Overall Meaning

The song "I'm Free" by Jimmie Rodgers is about a man who has been falsely accused and imprisoned. The first stanza talks about how he was bound and guarded all the time like a bird in a cage. He then goes on to say that he has finally found his freedom and is no longer imprisoned.

In the second stanza, the singer speaks of how he was once known and respected but was falsely accused, and he ends up in the chain gang. He worked in the rain, and his mother, who knew the truth, was brokenhearted and would cry every time she sent him a letter in jail. He goes on to say that he is finally free from the chain gang.

The third stanza speaks of how he was known only by a number, and the years of imprisonment deprived him of sleep. But finally, after years of living with shame, he has won back his name and is free from the chain gang. He then goes on to say that he is returning home to his sweetheart and mother, who waits for him after shedding tears for years.

This is just wonderful! I have discovered the music of Jimmie Rodgers on an early morning in August of 2021 after thinking I knew music well all of my life. My dad had this LP in his collection in the early 70's ,but I sure do not ever recall it. I would pull it out just to stare at the car. I am definitely going to be singing his songs through out the day and teaching myself how to yodel! Thanks Jimmie, you made my day!
