Sleep Baby Sleep
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Sleep, Baby, sleepy
Close your bright eyes
Listen to your mother, dear
Sing these lullabies

Sleep, Baby, sleepy
While angels watch over you
Listen to your mother, dear
While she sings to you
Sleep, Baby, sleepy
Angels watching you
Listen to your mother, dear
While she sings to you

I loved "Country Music" Was fascinated by Jimmie Rogers and his yodel. Where did it come from? I think I have found the answer. I am a collector of old Edison cylinders and early 78's. Some of my favorite old recordings are by George P. Watson, a second generation German entertainer. He recorded "Sleep, Baby, Sleep" a yodel song numerous times on cylinder and 78 between 1901 and 1905. When Rogers was discovered in Bristol in 1927 he recorded only two records. Just one was a yodel tune. It was "Sleep, Baby, Sleep". Rogers' yodel here is almost identical to Watson's! The rest is country music history. I hope some day George P. Watson will get some credit for his unintentional contribution to country music. (You can hear Watson's yodels on YouTube)

He recorded this shortly after he lost his daughter. Such a beautiful and sad recording.

Missing my dad tonight, would've been his birthday. He raised us up on the "old stuff". Jimmy Rogers and Earnest Tubb was 2 of his favorites. This song was one of our favorites by Jimmy and Waltz across Texas by Earnest. I had to hear them both before going to sleep. They brought back some very special memories for me when my dad would sit me on his lap and we would listen to them together. I love you daddy and miss those days so much.

Thank you for having this on here.

Simply the best yodel of all-time. Massive credit to Peer. Recorded in a church down south. Selected by him for these amazing acoustics. Impossible to believe it was 1927.

Uh, dude, I don't mean to be rude, but have you heard of the Bristol sessions?

And, the Church that you mention was in Camden, New Jersey.
