Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sleep, Baby, sleepy
Close your bright eyes
Listen to your mother, dear
Sing these lullabies

Sleep, Baby, sleepy
While angels watch over you
Listen to your mother, dear
While she sings to you

Sleep, Baby, sleepy
Angels watching you

Listen to your mother, dear
While she sings to you

Overall Meaning

The song "Sleep Baby Sleep" by Jimmie Rodgers is a lullaby that is meant to soothe babies to sleep. The song is structured like many other lullabies, with simple and easy-to-comprehend lyrics. The song tells the baby to sleep while the mother sings to them. The lyrics are repetitive, which is a common trait with lullabies, and this makes the song easy to remember and sing along to.

The first verse of the song tells the baby to close their eyes and listen to their mother sing lullabies. The second verse assures the baby that angels are watching over them, and the mother continues to sing to them. The third and final verse repeats the previous verses, emphasizing the mother's love for her child and the importance of sleep.

He recorded this shortly after he lost his daughter. Such a beautiful and sad recording.

I loved "Country Music" Was fascinated by Jimmie Rogers and his yodel. Where did it come from? I think I have found the answer. I am a collector of old Edison cylinders and early 78's. Some of my favorite old recordings are by George P. Watson, a second generation German entertainer. He recorded "Sleep, Baby, Sleep" a yodel song numerous times on cylinder and 78 between 1901 and 1905. When Rogers was discovered in Bristol in 1927 he recorded only two records. Just one was a yodel tune. It was "Sleep, Baby, Sleep". Rogers' yodel here is almost identical to Watson's! The rest is country music history. I hope some day George P. Watson will get some credit for his unintentional contribution to country music. (You can hear Watson's yodels on YouTube)

Rodgers apparently had claimed that he developed his Yodel "after catching a troupe of Swiss emissaries doing a demonstration at a church". Of course, I'm sure the story is more complicated than that, and I'm sure that your research would factor into that too.

Missing my dad tonight, would've been his birthday. He raised us up on the "old stuff". Jimmy Rogers and Earnest Tubb was 2 of his favorites. This song was one of our favorites by Jimmy and Waltz across Texas by Earnest. I had to hear them both before going to sleep. They brought back some very special memories for me when my dad would sit me on his lap and we would listen to them together. I love you daddy and miss those days so much.

Thank you for having this on here.
