My Romance
Jo Stafford Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Doesn't have to have a moon in the sky
My romance
Doesn't have to have a blue lagoon standing by
No month of May
No twinkling stars
No hideaway
No soft guitars
My romance
Doesn't need a castle rising in Spain
Nor a dance
To a constantly surprising refrain
Wide awake
I can make my most fantastic dreams come true
My romance
Doesn't need a thing but you
My romance
Doesn't need a castle rising in Spain
Nor a dance
To a constantly surprising refrain
Wide awake
I can make my most fantastic dreams come true
My romance
Doesn't need a thing but you
The lyrics to Jo Stafford's song "My Romance" speak about the power of love and how it doesn't require material possessions or grand gestures to be meaningful. The lyrics emphasize that true romance is not dependent on external factors such as the moon, a lagoon, or a castle in Spain. Rather, it is an internal feeling that can be realized through the presence of a loved one. The phrase "no soft guitars" suggests that even without the traditional symbols of romance, the singer can still create a romantic experience with the one they love.
The line "Nor a dance to a constantly surprising refrain" suggests that the singer does not require constant novelty or extravagance to maintain their romance. Instead, they emphasize that being "wide awake" and present with their loved one is enough to let their "fantastic dreams come true." In essence, the song is a testament to the purity of love and the notion that anything can be romantic as long as it involves the presence of the person you love.

What a wonderful song-----------& Jo's voice is note-perfect, & so easy, on the ears. -------it mattered not if she sang with a group, or just did it by herself, Jo's voice really was pure honey-sweet. ----------------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o

I first "discovered" Jo Stafford's voice when I bought a CD in a discount store. The CD had several miscellaneous artists & singers. Jo Stafford's extraordinary musicianship got my attention even though I enjoyed hearing her recordings on the radio in the fifties/sixties. The way she begins each note, sustains it and ends it reminds me of a well-played cello. The vibrato is similar as is the articulation of each note. I was so impressed that I did a little research and found that she had classical training. She really knew her music and it didn't hurt that she was married to a highly respected orchestra leader.
