Proveniente de una familia de melómanos, Joaquina comenzó a involucrarse en el mundo de la música clásica desde muy pequeña. Fue durante su estancia en el jardín de niños que ella como su familia comenzaron a darse cuenta de su talento vocal.

A los siete años comenzó sus estudios en música operística, mismos que dejó 10 años más tarde al encarrilar su carrera hacia géneros muy variados que van desde jazz y soul, música electrónica, hasta canción tradicional mexicana.

En el 2014 fue aceptada en Berklee College of Music, en Boston, Estados Unidos, donde participó en clases magistrales con Lizz Wright y Marlon Saunders y cantó junto con Totó la Momposina, Noel Schajris, Alexander Acha, entre otros.

Recibió la beca Voice Department Outstanding Achievement Award y fue seleccionada para cantar en el Commencement Ceremony de su graduación y ha participado en proyectos independientes como Marcol, una banda de la Ciudad de México de dream pop.

Jaoquina Mertz, también es poeta y por su notable talento recibió en el 2016 un premio, junto con Jonathan Mendoza, llamado Best of the Rest, en el concurso anual College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational, con un trabajo que se pronuncia en contra del racismo y la discriminación.

El pasado verano Mertz lanzó su primer EP, en el cual se pueden encontrar influencias musicales como R&B, neo-soul, jazz y blues, mismas que se escucharán en vivo en Guanajuato el viernes 20 de octubre a las 23:30 horas en El Club del Trasnoche, como parte del XLV FIC.
