It's a bizarre thing when I'm driving along as a delivery driver in a job that I hate and I hear this on the radio. I think this might well be the most beautiful piece of music ever written. It's like a mighty prayer that touches everything in creation and carries me way beyond towards heaven. I havnt listened to it for some time and having done so now, I'm immensely glad, it's restored my mind and spirit during a very difficult time. Thank you John Tavener, I love your music more than words can say. And Thank you to the person who shared this. God bless 🙏🏻💖💖💖💖

God rest your soul, John. You're much missed. But always to be remembered. Very few pieces of music have ever close at all to the sort of stunned reception I felt, years ago, to the sounds of Song to Athene. Confused, and reeling under what was close to a couple of blows on the crown with a ball pane hammer.

The extraordinary thing about this composition is that when you listen to the music you forget that it is a cello that you are listening to. It is like listening to a violin but then the cello pulls you back with its soulful tones. Beautiful composition composed by a beautiful and extraordinary man. So very sad to lose someone so special to music lovers over the world. RIP John, sleep tight.

I think I may have seen what he is describing with music. I guess there is a veil and a protecting one by nature or natural design. And sometimes things cross over and they can be very colorful and intuitive or intelligent.

Mary the Mother of God is the Protecting Veil. The title comes from the Veil that hid the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant, in which was the Holy of Holies, present in the Temple at Jerusalem. Jews and Christians understand that the Holy of Holies is God. Christians understand that Jesus the Christ is the Holy of Holies, God the Son, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. Mary bore Him in her blessed womb, therefore her body became the Protecting Veil, as well as the Tabernacle.

I am not religious at all. I grew up in an irish catholic family though. But, when I was four I saw a woman standing outside my back door, in a blue and white veiled dress. Almost exactly like the Virgin Mary is represented, she was looking at my dog Holly. I remember thinking it was a ghost back then, not thinking it was "Mary". I cannot explain what I saw, I remember I could see straight through her, the pillars of the balcony. And she vanished shortly afterwards.

Does anyone know why she might have appeared in front of me? But not look at me? If it was her?

But She was there so that one day, perhaps this day, you would wake up and know that you have not been the only one to have been Visited in this fashion... and that you are no longer four. He didn't give God credit. He meant that Tavener, who is Catholic, reveals God in every note. Tavener's religion is the inspiration for most of the music he writes anyway, so God would deserve some credit, whether he was real or imagined.

OK, I will try to straighten this up though it will be difficult. Mary has a very special place for both Catholics and Orthodox Christians as she is regarded the most righteous woman who ever lived. In fact, both denominations believe her to be perfectly free from sin all her life (but notice! she does not take anything from Christ's sacrifice: only through him we are saved, not through Mary) and staying a virgin (proof: her visitation by archangel Gabriel and her surprise that she should have a child + the Aramaic language uses the same term for both "brother" and "cousin"). And why is she sinless? As there are many prefigures of Messiah in the Old Testament, there is a prefigure of Mary and her sinlesness too. I am quoting John Paul II: "It is significant that [in Galatians 4:4] St. Paul does not call the Mother of Christ by her own name, "Mary," but calls her "woman": This coincides with the words of the Protoevangelium in the book of Genesis (cf. Gen. 3:15). She is that "woman" who is present in the central salvific event that marks the "fullness of time": This event is realized in her and through her." So you see, Gen. 3:15 cannot refer to Eve because she was not sinless. But still, a "woman", an enemy of serpent, is adressed. A daughter of Eve, seed of Eve. And then you have to go to Revelation, Chapter 12. The only mother of Messiah was Mary and she stands on the moon - moon is a symbol of night, of darkness, of sin. She is clothed in sun, that is, God's rightneousness, and has a crown as queen, stars representing 12 tribes of Israel and 12 apostles - that is, the church of the past and the new Christ's church. That''s why she is regarded as Mother of believers in Christ. And remember, she followed Christ all her life until His death on the cross and He said to John: "Behold thy mother!" We believe that He made her not only a mother of John, but of the whole church when He spoke those words. And what happened in Cana? It's clear Jesus didn't really want to perform a miracle: mine hour is not yet come. Yet, even thought he is God incarnate, he did the miracle and changed his mind because of Mary. You have to at least admit: she was a woman of great faith if God did it only for her! Do not forget, she raised Jesus, from all the episodes you can see she respected Him, believed in Him and followed Him until His death. She spoke before Elisabeth out of Holy Ghost saying, among other things: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." This express a perfect unity with God. What more she was supposed to do? And do not forget that she risked everything for faith in her son. She was accepted to pray with Apostles (a big deal in Jesus' times - men and women always prayed separately, they had to have her in high regard), she was between the first people to recieve Holy Ghost... And how much do we focus on Her? The same way as Scripture does: she is the most mentioned woman of NT, has an important role in many scenes since Anunciation to Cana and finally Crucifixion... She was nearest to Jesus and never rebuked Him. So in fact, Scripture focuses on her pretty much while not shadowing the life of Jesus. And it is the same with us. Understand me: during the Catholic mass, she is only mentioned 2 times in other prayers, but no direct prayer to her is made and during the Orthodox liturgy, there is only one direct prayer to her. What does it mean? That 98 percent of prayers are aimed directly to God, protestants really hyperbolize it. Outside of liturgy, you are free to pray to Mary as much as you wish (intercessory prayer was common even in times of Moses)... I have to ask you: was it a sin when Israelites asked Moses to pray for them to God? With Mary, situation is analogic. And because of her purity before God, her prayers to God are considered to be very efficient. And why is Heaven a living place in motion and intercessory prayer is not an imaginary thing? Well, read Apocalypse for instance, the martyrs around God's throne are actually asking things of Him while being fully aware of what is happening on earth... And now the most important thing, I have never asked anybody to change his/her faith or to believe me and I realize that you have different interpretations of Bible that can be found all over the internet. My idea is simple: to pray to Holy Ghost for TRUTH. As there is only one Holy Ghost, the truth cannot be subjective and different from one denomination to another. Ask HIM. Is it a sin to pray to Mary or not? Can she really help me? Remember, human brain will rot in grave, and that is why the interpretation of Scripture by a sinful man cannot be sufficient. Ask Holy Spirit, Spirit of Truth for He cannot lie and will teach you everything, as promised by Jesus. There is nothing wrong about this, right? If He says: It's a sin", obey Him without any delay. But remember: obey Him even if He says "it's not a sin". This way you will place God in the first place above all people and their teachings. I am not telling you to pray to Mary: pray to Holy Ghost, let God himself be your guide. Peace be upon you, no hard feelings please, I did not try to convince you, just to show you the point of Catholics and Orthodox because you asked. I personally consider all Christians brothers and sisters and I have never tried convince anybody that I know everything. I do not want to use the ways of Pharisees. Remember the parable of Good Samaritan. Jews hated Samaritans, differences between them were even bigger than between Protestants /Catholics / Orthodox. Yet, Jesus considered even Samaritan to be His brother because he was willing to help and no try for conversion of Samaritans was ever made by Him. There you can see what Paul later postulated: pistis, elpis, agape (faith, hope and charity). But agape is above all.
