Jonas Brothers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I can't help myself
And if you don't like it
Get with somebody else
I'll never change my ways
It's not a phase
This is how it is and this is how it's gonna stay
I am what I am I know what I'm not
I'm not the type of guy
That doesn't know how good he's got it
And I won't back down
Won't come around
Saying that I changed cause
That's not how it's going down
And I know (I know, I know)
Wherever I go (I go, I go)
I know where I stand
I am what I am
Hey! Hey!
I am what I am
Hey! Hey!
I am what I am
What can I say?
I'm gonna be this way
Right up until my dying day
Because that's how it goes head to my toes
And if it doesn't show well I just had to let you know
Because
I am what I am
And nobody else
And if you've got a problem
Better take it somewhere else
Because I can't turn back
I'm right on track
And if you think you know
Well then you better check your facts
Because
I know (I know, I know)
Wherever I go (I go, I go)
I know where I stand
I am what I am
Hey! Hey!
I am what I am
Hey! Hey!
Oh can't you see
I'm just being me
I can't be you
And I don't want to be
Don't try to get
Inside my head
Cause what you see is what you get
I am what I am
I can't help myself
And if you don't like it
Get with somebody else
I'll never change my ways
It's not a phase
This is how it is right up until my dying day
And I know (I know, I know)
Wherever I go (I go, I go)
I know where I stand
I am what I am
Hey! Hey!
I am what I am
Hey! Hey!
I am what I am
Hey! Hey!
I am what I am
Hey! Hey!
The song "1" by Jonas Brothers is about being true to oneself and not conforming to other people's beliefs or expectations. The singer openly declares that he is unapologetically who he is and that he won't pretend to be someone else just to please others. He expresses his confidence in his identity and asserts that he'll remain the same until his dying day.
The repeated refrain "I am what I am" showcases the singer's self-assuredness and refusal to change for anyone. The line "And if you don't like it, get with somebody else" implies that the singer is comfortable with a potential consequence of being true to oneself - that some people may not accept or like them for who they are. However, the singer is not bothered by this and suggests that those people should find someone more compatible with their beliefs.
Overall, the song encourages listeners to embrace their individuality and not be afraid to stand out. It highlights the importance of staying true to oneself and not conforming to societal pressures or expectations.

Such a thrill of a lifetime
What a night for a good time
Let the beat be your lifeline
Make it feel like the first time
Oh-oo, oh, oh-oo, oh, oh
Make it feel like the first time
Oh-oo, oh, oh-oo, oh, oh
Make it feel like the first time
Come on let it set you free
Right here, right now where you're supposed to be
Oh-oo, oh, oh-oo, oh, oh
Make it feel like the first time
So let's toast to the good life (good life), yeah, yeah
Just let go and free your mind (free your mind)
Let the beat (let the beat) be your lifeline (lifeline)
Make it feel (make it feel) like the first time (first time)
Oh-oo, oh, oh-oo, oh, oh
Make it feel like the first time
Oh-oo, oh, oh-oo, oh, oh
Make it feel like the first time
Come on let it set you free
Right here right now where you're supposed to be
Oh-oo, oh, oh-oo, oh, oh
Make it feel like the first time
(Make it feel like the first time)
Let your heart control your mind
Make it feel like the first time
Oh-oo, oh, oh-oo, oh, oh
Make it feel like the first time
Oh-oo, oh, oh-oo, oh, oh
Make it feel like the first time
Come on let it set you free
Right here, right now where you're supposed to be
Oh-oo, oh, oh-oo, oh, oh
Make it feel like the first time

This song makes me cry... I’ve grown up with them and you know we’re all grown up now. They’re still around and active but in a different way - we’ve all moved on. For the better, but it can still feel a little bit sad sometimes. Every once in a while you miss the old days.
“Let you heart control your mind, make it feel like the first time.”
I think of the first time I ever heard them and saw a video of them and how I fell in love instantly. I’ve never loved an artist or music group more than them and they were also my first. The first people I ever found on my own and began to listen to. They are special to me and probably always will be. I can’t explain the affect they’ve had on my life. All I can say is that I love them very much and am proud of them.
