Jonas Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah-ah-ah
Whoa-oh-oh-oh

I know this isn't what I wanted
I never thought it'd come this far
Thinkin' back to where we started
And how we lost all that we are
We were young and times were easy
But I could see it's not the same
I'm standing here but you don't see me
Give it all for that to change
I don't want to lose her
Don't want to let her go

Standing out in the rain
Need to know if it's over
Cause I would leave you alone
I'm flooded with all this pain
Knowing that I'll never hold her
Like I did before the storm
Yeah-ah-ah
Before the storm

With every strike of lightning
Comes a memory that lasts
Not a word is left unspoken
As the thunder starts to crash
Maybe I should give up

Standing out in the rain
Need to know if it's over
Cause I would leave you alone
I'm flooded with all this pain
Knowing that I'll never hold her
Like I did before the storm

I'm trying to keep the lights from going out
And the clouds from ripping out my broken heart
They always say a heart is not a home
Without the one who gets you through the storm

Standing out in the rain
Knowing that it's really over
Please don't leave me alone

I'm flooded with all this pain
Knowing that I'll never hold ya
Like I did before the storm

Yeah
Like I did before the storm

Overall Meaning

The Jonas Brothers' "Before the Storm" tackles the painful aftermath of a relationship that has gone sour, with the two partners struggling to move on from each other. Right from the beginning, the lyrics suggest a sense of helplessness, as the singer realizes that things have gone too far to be salvaged: "I know this isn't what I wanted / I never thought it'd come this far." From there, the song turns into a nostalgic reflection on how good things were before everything fell apart. There's a deep sense of longing to relive the past, as the singer remembers "when we started / And how we lost all that we are."

The title of the song is notable for its metaphorical meaning. Just like a storm, this relationship has raged on and brought with it a great deal of destruction. Now, after the storm has passed, the singer must accept the fact that things will never be the same: "I'm flooded with all this pain / Knowing that I'll never hold her / Like I did before the storm." The repeated refrain of "Standing out in the rain" drives home the sense of loneliness and desperation that comes with trying to hold onto something that's already gone.

I don't know what possessed me to click on a FRICKIN' JONAS BROTHER video, but last year, I needed SOMETHING and this turned out to be EXACTLY the joyful tonic my broken heart longed for.

My dudes, YOU AND YOUR WONDERFUL WIVES... CAN GIT. IT.

I am 64 years old. I was privileged to attend the GREATEST rock&roll star shows in the early 70s BACKSTAGE. I have seen world class artists of every genre.

Never EVER expected to get such a helium high from the JONAS Brothers.

Fortunately for me, I don't have to hang my head in shame as they are married and a bit more ahem mature. :)

What I REALLY LIKE about these guys is that THEY are happy, KNOW they are talented, have their own adorable retro style (I LOVE IT!) and they are very obviously having SUCH a blast. Which easily translates into FUN. I WOULD ATTEND A SHOW by them, as long as it was in a cool retro club (think Bimbo's in San Francisco).

My goodness this was a big surprise to me. I'm glad I did not end up such a music snob that I would miss these tricks. THEY ARE SO MUCH FUN.

THANKS FOR THE LIFT, YOU KOOL KIDS YOU!

P.S. Find Lavay Smith (San Francisco-search her Blue Skies video) and take her on the ROAD (when safe...)

Stay well everyone, and pray for rain where it belongs, and sun where it's needed. Our planet is going to kick us off 'the island' if we don't figure something out really quickly!
