In the Still of the Night
Joni James Lyrics

As I gaze out of my window
At the moon in it's flight
My thoughts all stray, stray to you
In the still of the night
While the world lies in slumber
Oh the times without number
Do you love me
Just like I love you
Are you my life to be
That dream come true
Or will this dream of mine
Will it fade way out of sight
Just like that moon growing dim
Way out on the rim of the hill
In the still of the night
The lyrics of Joni James's song In the Still of the Night are about the singer's reflections in the quiet hours of the night, as she gazes out of her window, looking at the moon. Her thoughts wander towards a special someone, as she wonders if they feel the same way she does. She expresses her insecurities, asking if her love will ever be reciprocated, or if it will just fade away like the dimming moon. The repetition of the phrase "in the still of the night" emphasizes the loneliness and intimacy of the moment, as well as the depth of the singer's emotions.
The theme of unrequited love is a common one in music, and Joni James's interpretation is particularly memorable because of her rich, smooth, and almost melancholic vocal style. The song was originally released by the Five Satins in 1956, and it gained popularity in the doo-wop genre. Joni James's 1961 version, however, is a more soulful and mellow reimagining, characterized by her unique vocal stylings. The song continues to be recognized as a timeless classic, and has been covered by various artists and used in numerous movies and TV shows.
