His characteristic style fuses rock and roll, samba, bossa nova, jazz, maracatu, funk, ska and even hip hop, with lyrics that mix humor and satire, as well as themes esoteric. Jorge's work has a unique importance for Brazilian music, as it incorporates new elements in swing and guitar playing, with characteristics of North American rock, soul and funk. Furthermore, he brought Arab and African influences, coming from his mother, born in Ethiopia.
He influenced sambalanço and samba-rock and was covered and honored by countless exponents of the new generations of Brazilian music, such as Mundo Livre S/A, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Skank, Fernanda Abreu, Racionais MC's and Belô Velloso. Jorge Ben Jor exploded with the song "Mas, Que Nada!" and, soon after, ratified his talent with another great hit, "Chove Chuva". Two songs that were neither bossa nova nor samba. Purists thought his music was too modern. It was difficult for musicians at the time to follow him, so much so that his first albums were recorded with a group that played samba jazz at Beco das Garrafas, Meirelles e os Copa 5, led by saxophonist J. T. Meirelles.

Mas agora ninguém chora mais
Chora mais, chora mais
Chorava mãe, chorava pai
Chorava todo mundo
Mas agora ninguém chora mais
Chora mais
Chora mais
Pois o menino voltou
Voltou homem, voltou doutor
Menino que é bom não cai
Pois já nasceu com a estrela
E sempre a mente sã
Menino que é bom não cai
Pois é protegido de Iansã
Chorava todo mundo
Mas agora ninguém chora mais
Chora mais, chora mais
Ôba, ôba, ôba Charles
Como é que é
My friend Charles
Como vão as coisas Charles?
Charles, Anjo 45
Protetor dos fracos
E dos oprimidos
Robin Hood dos morros
Rei da malandragem
Um homem de verdade
Com muita coragem
Só porque um dia
Charles marcou bobeira
Foi sem querer tirar férias
Numa colônia penal
Então os malandros otários
Deitaram na sopa
E uma tremenda bagunça
O nosso morro virou
Pois o morro que era um céu
Sem o nosso Charles
Um inferno virou
Mas Deus é justo
E verdadeiro
E antes de acabar as férias
Nosso Charles vai voltar
Paz alegria geral
Todo morro vai sambar
Antecipando o carnaval
Vai ter batucada
Uma missa em ação de graças
Vai ter feijoada
Uísque com cerveja
E outras milongas mais
Muitas queima de fogos
E saraivada de balas pro ar
Pra quando nosso Charles voltar
E o moro inteiro feliz
Assim vai cantar, amém
E o moro inteiro feliz
Quem ama quer casa, quem quer casa quer criança
Quem quer criança quer jardim
Quem quer jardim quer flor
E como já dizia Galileu, isso é que é amor
E como já dizia Galileu, isso é que é amor
Ai, caramba, caramba, Galileu, caramba, Galileu
Agora ninguém chora mais
Caramba, Galileu, caramba, Galileu
The lyrics of "Charles Anjo 45" by Jorge Ben and Caetano Veloso portray the story of a man named Charles, who is regarded as a noble character and protector of the weak in the slums of Brazil. The initial verses of the song describe the sorrowful state of the community before Charles' return, with everyone seemingly in tears. However, with the anticipation of Charles' homecoming, the lyrics take on an upbeat tone. The authors assert that good boys don't fall because they are born under a lucky star and are protected by the goddess Iansã.
The song then goes on to explain how Charles is revered in the favelas as a protector of the defenseless and a symbol of strength and courage. Although he is a criminal and has been incarcerated for a period, his people do not judge him harshly, and they long for him to return home. The authors conclude with a reference to Galileo Galilei, an Italian astronomer, stating that those who genuinely love aspire to create a comfortable home, bear children, have gardens and flowers, which is what love is all about.
From a thematic perspective, the lyrics are a tribute to the people who have earned respect and honor on the peripheries and are regarded as heroes within their communities despite being deemed outcast by the mainstream society. The lyrics express solidarity with the southern Brazilian communities and their struggle against poverty and injustice.
