DEAD OR ALIVE
Journey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A double secret agent
And he was paid to kill
With cold steel magnum force is how the man possessed the skill
He shot a man in Paris
He did a job in L.A.
And if the price was right, he'd surely
Take your life away
[Chorus:]
Wanted, dead or alive, blood for money, money
Assault, homicide, blood for
Money, money, money, money
Wanted

He drove a Maserati, lived up in the hills
A cat with nine lives that's gone
Too far to feel the chill
He never though it'd happen
It was his last mistake
Cause he was gunned down by a
Heartless woman's thirty eight.

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Journey's song "Dead or Alive" tell the story of a man who is a "double-secret agent" who is paid to kill. He possesses the skill of a cold steel magnum force, which he uses to shoot a man in Paris and complete a job in L.A. The lyrics also indicate that the man is willing to take anyone's life away if the price is right. However, despite his wealth and power, he ultimately falls victim to a heartless woman's thirty-eight and is gunned down, fulfilling the song's title of "dead or alive."

The lyrics of "Dead or Alive" likely draw inspiration from classic film-noir and spy thriller movies, which often feature themes of espionage, danger, and betrayal. The song's story reflects the darkness and ruthlessness that these films often portray, reminding listeners of the consequences that come with a life of crime and murder.

Overall, "Dead or Alive" is a gripping tale of power, wealth, and betrayal that plays with the listener's emotions and draws them into the story. The song's lyrics and melody work together to create a powerful narrative that is both haunting and memorable.

Only the musician’s musicians understand how difficult this song is. Absolute precision in writing and execution.

It's a Rockin' MASTERPIECE!!!

@65usaf6565

Yeah, it's surprising (or maybe not) how many musicians respected Journey, especially Schon. Back in the day, you could find quite a few hard rock/metal players giving props, even if it wasn't their cup of tea. Maybe it wasn't generally perceived that way.. and certainly not like today where everyone knows everyone else's opinions 24/7. But it was out there.

Can we take a moment to appreciate Neal here? His playing is incredible, and to play the whole rhythm section using downstrokes??? Unheard of. He's always been fantastic.
