Small Town Girl
Journey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere
Just a city boy
Born and raised in south Detroit
He took the midnight train goin' anywhere

A singer in a smoky room
The smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the nights
Street lights people
Living just to find emotion
Hiding somewhere in the nights

Working hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice
Just one more time

Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the nights
Street lights people
Living just to find emotion
Hiding somewhere in the nights

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Street lights people
Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'

Street lights people
Don't stop believin'

Hold on to that feelin'
Street lights people

Overall Meaning

The song Small Town Girl by Journey tells the story of two younger individuals from opposite lifestyles who meet on a train going "anywhere." The first verse introduces the two characters: the small town girl living in a lonely world who takes the midnight train, and the city boy who was born and raised in South Detroit who also takes the midnight train. The second verse takes place in a "smoky room"- the girl's tone has darkened, and we see that she is in the city now. The song shifts to a chorus: "Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard/ Their shadows searching in the night/ Streetlights people, living just to find emotion/ Hiding somewhere in the night." The language turns to a broader discussion of the characters in the song, a cast of people searching for meaning and connection in their shady, obscure nightlife experiences.

The third stanza changes slightly, with a shift to a first-person point of view that talks about personal autonomy: " Working hard to get my fill/ Everybody wants a thrill/ Payin' anything to roll the dice/ Just one more time". We see the characters have a rollercoaster lifestyle with high stakes and gambling: "Some will win, some will lose/ Some were born to sing the blues/ Oh, the movie never ends/ It goes on and on and on and on." The final chorus repeats itself as a potent reminder to persevere in seeking fulfillment, even when the night is insidious and interminable: "Don't stop believin'/ Hold on to that feelin'/ Street lights people/ Don't stop believin'/ Hold on to that feelin'/ Street lights people/ Don't stop believin'/ Hold on to that feelin'/ Street lights people."

I don't know if it's the lack of stereo, or the excess noise in the treble, or something completely different, but THIS version in particular feels really nostalgic. As soon as it started playing, I could feel my childhood coming back, right from the very first note. The other versions I can find on YouTube just don't hit me quite as hard.

I am so old that I remember this song when it first came out on America's Top 40.  This song never grows old.  If you are a chick, you are the small town girl.  If you are a dude,  you are the lonely boy
