Thick Skin
Joydrop Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You want to and you will, I know you well
But you fight it, it wears you down, it's bigger than you
It's bad for the soul but it's so good for the moment
But I think I can keep it together
Yeah I think I can weather it all
'Cause the sky never falls
And the world never ends
I have thick skin
It smashes, it crashes, it treads so lightly
Gets in your head, you shut your eyes and ears so tight, see
There's no coincidence, it's all in your mind
There are no accidents, it's all by design
You may be strong, you may be brave
You may be lost and you may be saved
You may not know and you might think you know
But everywhere you go it will follow
You love, you trust, you're good, you'll do what you're told
In "Thick Skin" by Joydrop, the lyrics explore a common theme of dealing with life's challenges and struggles. The song is about the constant battle between the desire to please others and the toll it can take on one's life. The opening lines of the song suggest that the singer is someone who is obedient and follows other people's orders, which gives them the impression that they are trustworthy and good. However, this behavior ultimately wears them down, and they begin to realize that it is not sustainable. The line "It's bad for the soul but it's so good for the moment" highlights this struggle, as the singer grapples with the temptation to do what others want in the short term, despite its long-term consequences.
The chorus of the song expresses the singer's determination to keep it together despite the difficulties they face. The lyrics "the sky never falls / and the world never ends / and for all the things that I can't control / I have thick skin" suggest that the singer has developed a resilience to life's challenges, and they are strong enough to face whatever comes their way. The second verse of the song reinforces this theme, suggesting that the singer understands that while life may be difficult, it is also designed to challenge and test them.
Overall, Joydrop's "Thick Skin" is a powerful exploration of the human experience and the struggles we face as we navigate life's challenges. It encourages listeners to stay resilient and persevere, even in the face of adversity.
