The band's membership has seen much turnover, including a revolving cast of drummers in the 1970s and the departure of singer Rob Halford in 1992. Tim "Ripper" Owens, formerly of Winter's Bane, replaced Halford in 1996 and recorded two albums with Judas Priest, before Halford returned to the band in 2003. The current line-up consists of Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis. The band's best-selling album is 1982's Screaming for Vengeance, with their most commercially successful line-up featuring Ian Hill, Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, guitarist K. K. Downing, and drummer Dave Holland. Tipton and Hill are the only two members of the band to appear on every album.
Halford's operatic vocal style and the twin guitar sound of Downing and Tipton have been a major influence on heavy metal bands. Judas Priest's image of leather, spikes, and other taboo articles of clothing were widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s. The Guardian referred to British Steel as the record that defines heavy metal. Despite a decline in exposure during the mid-1990s, the band has once again seen a resurgence, including worldwide tours, being inaugural inductees into the VH1 Rock Honors in 2006, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010, and having their songs featured in video games such as Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series. In 2022, Judas Priest were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Light Comes Out Of Black
Judas Priest Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Raptures in the past
Craving for salvation of the mind
Serenity is calling
Seeking only truth
Vision block forever left behind
Stand and face the fear
Give him eye too eye
Walk the walk right here
Images unraveling
Saw through the disguise
Crystal clear and shining through and through
Liberation traveling
Bringing down the wall
Universe waking coming too
Light comes out of black
Stand and face the fear
Give him eye too eye
Walk the walk right here
Let the fight begin
Watch the power soar
Work the magic now
Free forever more
Now feel the light
Lifting up and rising all alive
Now feel the light
Keep the faith inside and i'll survive...
Innocence is calling
Raptures in the past
Craving for salvation of the mind
Serenity is calling
Seeking only truth
Visual blocked forever
Left behind
Light comes out of black
Stand and face the fear
Give him eye too eye
Walk the walk right here
Let the fight begin
Watch the power soar
Work the magic now
Free forever more
Light comes out of black
The lyrics of "Light Comes Out Of Black" by Judas Priest revolve around themes of revelation and liberation. The song speaks to the journey of a person seeking freedom from spiritual darkness, and the challenges that come with that journey. The opening lines, "Innocence is calling, raptures in the past, craving for salvation of the mind" seem to suggest that the singer is seeking to return to a state of purity or innocence, free from the sins of their past. The use of the word "craving" creates a sense of urgency, emphasizing the singer's need for salvation.
As the song progresses, the singer begins to describe the process of awakening or revelation. They see through the "disguise" and the "vision block" that has kept them from seeing the truth. The line "let the fight begin, watch the power soar, work the magic now, free forever more" suggests that the process of awakening involves struggle and effort, but that it ultimately leads to freedom.
The repetition of the phrase "Light comes out of black" throughout the song reinforces the idea that there is hope and light even in the darkest moments. The use of imagery like "lifting up and rising" and "universe waking" suggests a kind of cosmic or spiritual transformation, as if the singer's awakening is connected to something larger than themselves.
Overall, the lyrics of "Light Comes Out Of Black" speak to the struggle for freedom and the power of revelation to bring about change.
