im only 20 minutes in....i recently played the dead space series for the first time, and i noticed the v.o. work is probably the best i've heard. (i understand the series gets flack in general for being generic EA schlock but nonetheless)

I always wonder why games insist on giving V.O. too much reverb. No matter the environment everyone sounds like they are in a cave. Mass Effect Im looking at you.

In Dead Space 3 particularly the dialogue sounds like movie dialogue. It sounds like it was recorded on location. Sound drifts in and out of clarity depending on other ambient sounds. It doesnt sound like a voice actor in a hyper clean sounding sound booth, really close to the mic.

Anyone else no what im talking about?

Fascinating interview Karak, I loved it!

I really feel bad that pretty much 90% of the reviewers not giving sound (in all of it's aspects) enough love during their review of games...it's one of the reasons why I always check your reviews out first.

Darkholow this games sound is probably the best of the best. there were numerous times I looked over my shoulder last night thinking something was creaking around my house when it was just the game being bad ass.

I have recently begun producing my own music and hearing guys with some notches under their belt talk about the hardships, frustrations and humble beginnings that they came from before getting into the industry is amazing. Your experience with sound lends itself well to holding this interview. Often the best interviews comes from the interviewer having a mastery over the subject and asking the right questions and asking for certain details which makes it insightful. Great job karak!

Great interview as always Karak! Sound really makes up 50% of the experience, which is also why it's sad to see so many people not caring if their speakers/headphones are horrible.

Really loving these interviews with sound/music guys and other less frequently interviewed names behind the games we love. This one and your interview with Austin Wintory are fantastic.

On another topic: I never really watch your console reviews since I trey to minimize the amount of Stuff I Own, but Nioh has me REALLY considering the purchase of a PS4. Do you think you'll do a review on it? And if not, PLEEEEEAAAASE? ;)

I know that, generally speaking, interview is not the most popular genre (at least, that's my perception) and, I should imagine, it's not an easy task to get it right. What he said around 19min is so true. Once you are stabilished it's easy to say "no, don't work for free, you are going to ruin our jobs!". People are too likely to forget their origins and how they started, giving these advices and making virtually impossible to new guys to start.
If you are making a portfolio, might as well put it in use somewhere.

I'm so glad this interview came up. I started learning how to produce music and I was thinking about working some sounds and music in video games as a way to get myself out there.
I'm also a big fan of video games so it's the best of both worlds!

Great interview dude. I loved The Saboteur too probably the most under-rated gems on the 360 Imo. Really bummed Pandemic got shut down. I would be thrilled if Phil Spencer went on stage at E3 and said they had resurrected Pandemic here is The Saboteur back compatible and boom here's the sequel or some new IP from PS that would be a dream come true.

Awesome insights into an industry. Great tips and projects for anyone looking to make a career (adding your own audio for previously existing trailers? hell yeah!).

Somber ending bit about the state of reviewers. Sounds like a bunch of bratty kids who don't want to work kicking their feet up and acting like they got it made because they play games for a living.

I really liked the sound in Pillars for the most part but there was nowhere near enough of it. I heard the same music cycle way too often. I hope it's something that gets addressed in Deadfire.

I used to use Magix Music Maker! :) Back when I was trying to create an old school style RPG with RPG maker. I didn't want to use any of the RPG maker assets. I use FL Studio nowadays.

on a relative note adressed to multinational companies of electric products,cars etc etc:
STOP USING CLASSICAL MUSIC TO ADVERTISE A WASHING MACHINE JUST BECAUSE IT HAS NO COPYRIGHT.
use these magnificent people and pay them a very small portion of ur millions and millions.

What was it - sound makes 80% of the movie? In games is probably 40-50% cuz the gameplay is what drives anything. But damn I love the pros talking about sound. It is such a tough and neglected job in the public eye. And entertainment is lost without it.
