The stylistic range of left-field pop artist Kali Uchis is reflected in the variety of her collaborators – an extensive genre-crossing list that includes Tyler, the Creator, Gorillaz, Daniel Caesar, Juanes, and BadBadNotGood. A singer, songwriter, and producer, as well as a video director, Uchis truly arrived on her own with the self-released Por Vida (2015), an EP that led to a deal with Virgin EMI. By the time Uchis released her lively debut full-length, the Top Five Billboard R&B/hip-hop hit Isolation (2018), she had already been nominated for Grammy awards through her featured appearances on Daniel Caesar's "Get You" and Juanes' "El Ratico."
Kali Uchis experienced the majority of her upbringing in Virginia and also spent time in her parents' native Colombia. As a teenager growing up in Alexandria, just south of Washington, D.C., she learned to play piano and saxophone and also developed a deep interest in visual arts. Her recorded debut was made in 2012 with the self-released mixtape Drunken Babble. Within three years, she had several singles to her credit, including "Know What I Want" and "Lottery," typically promoted with videos she directed, as well as collaborations with Snoop Dogg, GoldLink, Tyler, the Creator, and Major Lazer. Following the 2015 independent release of Por Vida, a free digital-download EP with tracks produced by Diplo, Kaytranada, and Tyler, Uchis started releasing her material through major-label Virgin EMI. A DJ Dahi-tweaked version of Por Vida's "Ridin Round," issued that November after a move to Los Angeles, was the artist's first single for the major label. "Only Girl," a relaxed Kaytranada production featuring Vince Staples and the Internet's Steve Lacy, followed in April 2016. She was also featured that year on Daniel Caesar's "Get You."
Throughout 2017, Uchis added to her discography of featured appearances via tracks by Juanes, Gorillaz, Tyler, Bootsy Collins, and Miguel, and she previewed her debut album with the singles "Tyrant" (featuring Jorja Smith) and "Nuestro Planeta" (featuring Reykon). By the end of the year, "Get You" had been nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best R&B Performance, and Juanes' "El Ratico" made Uchis a Latin Grammy nominee when it was up for Record of the Year. January 2018 saw the release of the BadBadNotGood-produced single "After the Storm" (featuring Tyler and Bootsy). Uchis released her debut album, Isolation, three months later. It debuted at number 32 on the Billboard 200 and entered the R&B/hip-hop chart at number four.

WHateva U Want
Kali Uchis Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Like you always do
When everything is someone
Else's fault to you
Sweet lies you tell yourself
And it was all good, we were all good
It was all love until you got to
Go and make up an excuse always an excuse
Or just tryna make it right
Well think twice, this time
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Bet you want it, don't you?
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Bet you want it, don't you?
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Don't you want it?
Don't you want it? Don't you want it all?
Get me off this carousel
It's like an eternal hell
Through the Winter, and the Summer
And the springtime, and the Autumn
Everything somehow stays the same inside
Today, it's a new day
Like cherries, isn't it sweet?
Take what you take from life's Cherry tree
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Bet you want it, don't you?
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Bet you want it, don't you?
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Don't you want it?
Don't you want it? Don't you want it all?
Bet you want it all bet you want it all
Bet you want it all
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Bet you want it, don't you?
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Bet you want it, don't you?
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Don't you want it?
Don't you want it? Don't you want it all?
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Bet you want it, don't you?
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Bet you want it, don't you?
Bet you want it, bet you want it
Don't you want it?
Don't you want it? Don't you want it all?
In the lyrics of "WHateva U Want" by Kali Uchis, a sense of frustration and disappointment is palpable as the singer addresses someone who constantly makes things difficult and shifts blame onto others. The opening lines set the tone for the song, highlighting the recurring pattern of excuses and self-deception that the other person engages in. The mention of "sweet lies" suggests a facade that has been maintained, but ultimately the truth cannot be hidden forever. The repetition of "it was all good, we were all good, it was all love" underscores the sense of betrayal felt when the other person's true intentions are revealed.
The chorus of the song, with its repeated refrain of "Bet you want it, don't you?", seems to reflect the singer's realization that the other person may have ulterior motives and desires that are not openly expressed. There is a sense of manipulation and hidden agendas at play, which further adds to the tension and conflict in the relationship. The plea to "think twice this time" indicates a call for introspection and honesty in order to address the underlying issues.
The imagery of a carousel is introduced in the following verse, symbolizing a cycle of repetition and stagnation that the singer feels trapped in. The reference to the changing seasons - Winter, Summer, Springtime, Autumn - suggests a passage of time marked by unchanging circumstances and emotional turmoil. Despite the desire for a fresh start symbolized by a "new day", the sense of déjà vu and frustration lingers, creating a sense of despair and resignation.
The repetition of the question "Don't you want it all?" in the chorus brings the focus back to the central theme of desire and ambition. The ambiguity of what exactly is being desired adds layers of complexity to the song, reflecting the intricate emotions and conflicts within the relationship. Overall, "WHateva U Want" delves into the complexities of human relationships, exploring themes of deception, manipulation, and unfulfilled desires with a sense of resignation and introspection.
