After releasing a demo in 1995, their first release was the self-titled EP Kampfar, by Season of Mist in 1996 followed by full length Mellom skogkledde aaser by Malicious Records in 1997. Being a studio band, without spending time on live shows or tours and with no intentions to slow down they released another EP Norse in 1998, and full length Fra underverdenen in 1999 both on Hammerheart Records. Then there were 7 years of studio silence although they began to play their first live shows in 2004.
Signing to Napalm records, they released three full length albums on that label: Kvass (2006), Heimgang (2008), & Mare (2011). All were well received by critics and listeners alike. Thus completed their contract with Napalm.
Their next releases were two singles leading up to their sixth full length album, 2014's Djevelmakt released by Indie Recordings.

Ringes flammene inn
Fшtter danser rundt I ring
Skadeild mot nord
I ringdans rundt flammene
Tryllesang og negler som bukkehorn
I ring rundt ilden galopperer sorte bein
Flammen slikker olmt fra kroket fingers
Bukkehorn
Fшtter danser rundt de sorte ord
Manes fram av hat
Med galder og tryllesang
Ild tennes med ord
Galder om blod
Ridende pе sorte bein
Kroket og slu
Danser det
I ring rundt ilden galopperer sorte bein
Ridende rundt flammen I mot nord
Flammen slikker olmt fra kroket fingers
Bukkehorn
Fшtter danser rundt de sorte ord
The lyrics to Kampfar's song "Ildstemmer" describe a chaotic dance around a fiery inferno, where feet and bodies sway to the rhythm of the flames. The dance is infused with magic and spellbinding melodies, as the participants chant and play instruments made of goat horns. The fire represents both destruction and transformation, as it is fed by the anger and hatred of those who summon it.
The riders who gallop around the fire with their blackened bones and twisted fingers are embodiments of darkness and deceit. They summon the flames with their magic spells, which are fueled by their thirst for blood and retribution. The lyrics conjure up images of paganism and ritualistic practices, where words and music are used to awaken and channel powerful energies.
Overall, the lyrics to "Ildstemmer" evoke a sense of primal energy, where dark forces are unleashed and harnessed through music and incantations. The fire becomes a symbol of power and transformation, as its heat and light consume everything in their path and give birth to new forms of life.
