After releasing a demo in 1995, their first release was the self-titled EP Kampfar, by Season of Mist in 1996 followed by full length Mellom skogkledde aaser by Malicious Records in 1997. Being a studio band, without spending time on live shows or tours and with no intentions to slow down they released another EP Norse in 1998, and full length Fra underverdenen in 1999 both on Hammerheart Records. Then there were 7 years of studio silence although they began to play their first live shows in 2004.
Signing to Napalm records, they released three full length albums on that label: Kvass (2006), Heimgang (2008), & Mare (2011). All were well received by critics and listeners alike. Thus completed their contract with Napalm.
Their next releases were two singles leading up to their sixth full length album, 2014's Djevelmakt released by Indie Recordings.

Blitzwitch
Kampfar Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Light the torches
Stormhex
Bloodhex, Burst into flames
Stormhex
Blood hex, Cold blitzing rage
Storm hex
Blood hex, Over dark
Northern blue
Storm hex
Blood hex, Between fire and
Wood
Like a fistful of blood
Feels like winter and moon
Feel the blitzwitch
Feel the blitzwitch
Like a force underneath
Over steep wind washed cliffs
Feel the blitzwitch
Feel the blitzwitch
Over dark northern blue
Between fire and wood
Feel the blitzwitch
Feel the blitzwitch
Feel the blitzwitch
Feel it burst into flames
Feel the blitzwitch
Feel the blitzwitch
"Light the torches hunt her down, let the
Devil w***e burn
Let the devil w***e burn, hunt her down"
Like a fistful of blood
Like a winter of hate
Between fire and wood
Between fire and hate
The lyrics in Kampfar's song "Blitzwitch" are metaphoric and open to interpretation. It seems to be about embracing a dark, primal force, represented by the "blitzwitch", and feeling its power. The repeated use of "stormhex" and "blood hex" creates a sense of intensity and aggression. The lines "Light the torches, ride with the devil" suggest a dangerous journey or ritualistic pursuit of this force. The repeated commands to "hunt her down, let the devil w***e burn" create an ominous tone, perhaps suggesting the desire to destroy something or someone.
The imagery of "dark northern blue" and "between fire and wood" reinforces the idea of a powerful, elemental force. The use of contrasting elements like fire and wood, winter and moon, and fire and hate creates tension and builds on the theme of opposing forces. The lyrics seem to be inviting the listener to feel the power of the blitzwitch and harness it for themselves.
