Lieb' ich dich zwischen Bruges und Gand –
Ay Marieke, Marieke, die Zeit wird lang
Im flachen Land von Bruges bis Gand!
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Waait de wind, de stomme wind
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Lijdt het licht, het donk're licht
En schuurt het zand over mijn land
Mijn platte land, mijn Vlaanderland!
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Waait de wind, c'est fini!
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Weent de zee, déjà fini!
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Lijdt het licht, tout est fini
En schuurt het zand over mijn land
Mijn platte land, mijn Vlaanderland!
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Lacht de duivel, de zwarte duivel
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Brandt mijn hart, mijn oude hart!
Zonder liefde, warme liefde
Sterft de zomer, de droeve zomer
En schuurt het zand over mijn land
Mijn platte land, mijn Vlaanderland!
Klaus Hoffmann's "Marieke" is a melancholic love ballad that speaks to the enduring power of love and the pain of its absence. The singer in the song is in love with a woman named Marieke, and he carries that love with him no matter where he goes in the flat lands that stretch between Bruges and Gand, two cities in Belgium. The song is punctuated by the repeated chorus, which asserts that love is necessary for life to retain its warmth and vitality. The verses, meanwhile, weave a portrait of a bleak and lonely landscape, painted with phrases like "the sky hangs gray and sick" and "the wind weeps." The song's message is timeless: without love, life can be a cruel and empty experience.
