Kollegah started rapping in 2004 under his first alias "T.o.n.i."
He released his first mixtape "Zuhältertape Vol. 1" (Zuhälter = german for "pimp") in 2004 for free over the internet which caused a rather great hype in the german underground rap scene. Kollegah fascinated the listeners with lightspeed double or even tripple time rap, incredibly funny and complex punchlines and ruthless drug dealer stories which had never been before in Germany.
He then would start rapping in the german "RBA" (Reimliga Battle Arena, an online platform for german Mcs to battle each other via mp3s) and caused a great hysteria aswell because alot of people could not believe that such a good and verbally gifted player would attend their small community.
In 2005 the "Selfmade Records" Label, home to Artists like Favorite or Shiml signed him and immediately re-released his Zuhältertape as an "X-mas edition" with 6 bonus tracks.
A year after, he released his highly anticipated follow-up mixtape called "Boss der Bosse" (german for boss of the bosses).
2007 finally marked the release of his first Album, "Alphagene" (german for alpha genes) which sold surprisingly well for a purely independently released album, peaking at #51 in the german album charts. The successor "Kollegah" in 2008 even topped this remarkable chart entry with a stunning #17 entry in it's first week.

Ja
Ja, aber dann bräuchten wir halt einen, der den Anführer macht
Ich mach' den Job!
Ja, dann mach' mich zum General
Der General, General, ist relativ real
Der General, General (ja), ist relativ real
Der General, der Admiral
Rolls-Royce-Interieur rustikal
Respektable Villa voller Rembrandts
The lyrics of Kollegah's song "Der General" delve into themes of power, control, and the hierarchical structures present in society. The lyrics depict a conversation about going to war, with the question of whether it is truly necessary. The singer expresses their willingness to be the leader, to become the general and take charge in such a situation.
The repetition of the phrase "Der General, General, ist relativ real" emphasizes the notion that the concept of a general, as a symbol of leadership and authority, is both real and relative. It suggests that the role of a general can be subjective, perhaps dependent on the context and the perception of individuals involved.
The following lines describe the opulent lifestyle associated with being a general or a person of authority. References to the Admiral, Rolls-Royce interiors, and prestigious villas filled with Rembrandt artworks paint a picture of extravagance and indulgence. The mention of black horses racing on the track adds to the imagery of wealth and luxury.
The lyrics then allude to the underground world of the red-light district, where the general's profits from prostitutes are carefully recorded. This portrays a darker side to the general's character, showcasing the control he maintains over various aspects of society. The concept of paying prostitutes by tossing bread crumbs is symbolic of the general's manipulation and exploitation of others for personal gain.
The lyrics further highlight the general's power and influence, depicting him as someone who is glorified and revered. He rules like a prince and resides in a castle with a moat. The mention of child soldiers willing to kill for a few meals reflects the extent to which the general's authority is embedded in society, where people are blindly loyal to him.
The song also touches on the general's notoriety, as he is hunted by Interpol due to his undesirable actions and questionable behavior. His actions are likened to the character Rumpelstilzchen, known for his cunning and deceptive nature. The mention of insects like bugs and termites residing in certain places portrays the idea that while some individuals are willing to submit to the general's authority, others refuse to follow because they consider themselves to be fundamentally different.
Overall, the lyrics of "Der General" explore the power dynamics and luxurious lifestyles associated with being a leader, while also alluding to the darker aspects of control, manipulation, and the consequences of such authority. The relative nature of being a general suggests that perceptions of power can vary, highlighting the complex relationship between leaders and their followers.
