The lyrics of Léo Ferré's song "La chambre" tell the story of a person who has been loaned four old walls to make their bedroom. They have tried their best to make the room look good by hanging diplomas they never received and decorations that they don't have. In order to further decorate the room, they have put up photos of women who refused them and books they never wrote on shelves. They have also hidden away expensive wines they don't know how to appreciate, and all the money and valuables they could have earned in the past.
However, despite all the efforts, the room still feels incomplete until a beam of blue light comes through the window, transforming the room into a beautiful, dreamlike space filled with tasselled rugs, luxurious curtains, colourful cushions, and a painting of a woman on an easel. The room is now complete with jewelry, bouquets of sentiment, and dreams. In only four seconds, the person's old room has become the world's most beautiful room.
The song portrays the futility of material possessions and societal expectations in our quest for happiness, as true happiness cannot be bought or faked. The lyrics also speak to the human need for beauty and the idea that beauty can create an illusion of happiness.

On m'a prêté quatre vieux murs
I have been given the opportunity to use these four old walls
Pour y loger mes quatre membres
I will dwell here and use it as a space for my body to rest
Et dans ce réduit très obscur
Although the area is quite small and dark
Je voulus installer ma chambre
I wanted to turn this space into my bedroom
Pour lui donner un air coquet
So I decorated it to make it look chic
Je suspendis aux murs en pente
I hung on the sloping walls
Les diplômes que j'ai manqué
The diplomas I never obtained
Et mes décorations absentes
And ornaments that are not present
On a table, there are pictures of those who rejected me
Sur des rayons les in-quarto
On the shelves, there are books
That I was not able to write
J'ai mis derrière les fagots
I hid away
Les grands crus de notre royaume
The finest wines in our kingdom
Les Chambertin et les Margaux
The Chambertin and Margaux wines
Dont j'ignore jusqu'à l'arôme
I do not even know what they taste like

All the valuables and gold
Que j'aurais pu gagner naguère
That I could have earned in the past
Par la fenêtre se glissant
Through the window, a soft blue beam of light slips in
Voici qu'un doux rayon bleuâtre

A curtain lifts up
Sur un chevalet d'illusions
On an easel of illusions
Voici des coussins de serments

Couvrant des fauteuils de promesses
Covering chairs of promises
