Madame ? Tu vas retrouver ton amant pendant que ton mari travaille
Madame ? Le bonheur ça vaut pas trois mailles
Madame ? Aussitôt là faut qu'il s'en aille
Alors... Profite de l'après-midi
Madame ? Où courez-vous dans le vacarme et le silence du devoir
Madame ? Tu vas retrouver ton mari pendant que l'Autre fait la pause
Madame ? C'est du chagrin qui se repose
Alors... Il ne faut pas le réveiller
Le bonheur... Qu'est-ce que c'est ?
In the song "Le Bonheur" by Léo Ferré, the lyrics depict a woman, referred to as "Madame," who is constantly on the move, searching for happiness. The first stanza questions where she is rushing in the chaos and silence of the street. It suggests that she is going to meet her lover while her husband is at work. The lyrics convey a sense of cynicism, implying that happiness is not worth much, only three mailles (a small denomination of currency), and that once it arrives, it quickly disappears.
The second stanza continues to question Madame's actions, this time highlighting her meeting with her husband while "l'Autre" (the other), presumably her lover, takes a break. Once again, the lyrics convey a sense of pessimism, stating that happiness is not much, just a momentary break from sorrow. The lyrics suggest that Madame must not awaken happiness, as if it is fragile, fleeting, and easily disturbed.
Overall, the song explores the elusive nature of happiness and the constant pursuit that individuals engage in. It portrays happiness as something temporary, easily disrupted, and ultimately insignificant compared to the larger realities of life. The lyrics offer a critique of society's understanding and pursuit of happiness, questioning its true value and suggesting that it may be an illusion that ultimately leaves one unfulfilled.
