Ah !
The lyrics of Léo Ferré's song "Merde à Vauban" tell the story of a convict who is serving his sentence in the Vauban prison on the Île de Ré, an island off the French Atlantic coast that was well-known for its prison camps. The singer describes the harsh living conditions in the prison, where he eats only black bread and is surrounded by white walls. He longs for his beloved back home but knows he will likely not survive his sentence to return to her. The singer curses the prison and the man for whom it is named, the famed military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, and expresses his frustration with the authorities who sent him to prison.
In the second stanza, the singer expresses his longing for his beloved and the pain of knowing he has missed his chance with her. He compares her to an angel in the sky that he can never reach, as he is locked up with the other prisoners. Despite this, he dreams of being reunited with her and sings out his hatred for Vauban.
In the final stanza, the singer describes the passage of time in the prison, where he is plagued by the ever-present lice and dreams of his lost love. He imagines the day when he will finally leave the prison, carried out in a black coffin. He looks forward to the freedom that death will bring but vows to continue cursing Vauban, even from the grave.
Overall, the song "Merde à Vauban" is a powerful commentary on the experience of being a prisoner and the harsh realities of incarceration. It speaks to the human desire for freedom and the deep loneliness that can accompany long periods of confinement, as well as the feeling of helplessness and anger that comes from being unjustly punished.

@georgesmeessen7796
