Paris Texas
Lana Del Rey [feat. SYML] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went to Paris (Texas)
With a suitcase in my hand
I had to leave
Knew they wouldn't understand

When you know, you know
When you know, you know
It's time, it's time to go
When you know, you know
Then the more you know
It's time to go

I took a trip to Spain
Just a notebook in my hand
Then I went to see some friends of mine
Down in Florence, Alabama

When you know, you know
When you know, you know
It's time, it's time to go
When you know, you know
That it's time to leave
Like the summer breeze

When everyones' star's bright
Brighter than you are
It's time to go
And you're the only one left
Dancing while they're on the floor
Time to go

I flew back home
It seemed everything the same (Venice, California)
Except that you weren't home
"Hello," I call to no one, but

When you're home, you're home (Venice, California)
When you're home, you're home (Venice, California)
You're home, when you're alone
When you're right, you're right

When you're right, you're right
Even when you're wrong

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Lana Del Rey's song Paris Texas set the scene of the singer packing her suitcase to leave her hometown of Paris in Texas. It's clear that she is leaving for good, as she "knew they wouldn't understand". This feeling of isolation or not fitting in is reinforced in the later lines "When everyones' star's bright, brighter than you are, it's time to go. And you're the only one left dancing while they're on the floor." The singer then takes the listener on a journey through her travels to Spain and Florence, Alabama. The repetition of "when you know, you know" suggests that her decision to leave her hometown was a definitive one, and that it became clear to her at some point that it was time to move on.

The song then takes a melancholic turn when the singer returns home to Venice, California, only to find that things have changed, and the person she was hoping to find there is no longer there. The lines "It seemed everything the same, except that you aren't home. Hello, I call to know why, but" leave the listener with a palpable sense of loss and loneliness. The final lines "When you're right, you're right, even when you're wrong" suggest that the singer knows she made the right decision to leave, even though things didn't turn out as she hoped in the end.

Y aquí me ves.
☀❤

Honestly that would make such a cool and emotionally dense music video, I read you comment before I started listening to the song and pictured a dancer in the middle of a fog covered lake with an overcast grey sky. She begins with a male dancer who then abandons here and she’s left in the middle of the lake to fend for herself while each of the shores progressively grows further and further away. Alongside that it shows Lana in the progression of the story of the song, showing the town sign of Paris, Texas then in Alabama as her friends walk ahead of her in a grassy path and the shot hovers over her shoulder watching them laugh. Not that they’re ignoring her or leaving but showing her being isolated like the dancer on the lake. Idk my vision may not completely fit with the song but I thought your comment was really cool and it inspired that vision in my head, made me tear up a little. Really cool thought you had about the ballerina on the water

This song feels like arriving at your childhood home, late at night, after being away for years, setting your suitcase down by the front door, and realizing no one lives there anymore.
