But you've been keeping quiet, keeping quietly your thoughts away from me
And you're so sure of all the words I need to say
Step off the stage we'll talk about how you don't even know me anyway
Announce that I was wrong, I thought I did what I was told
You got me wrong, you got me wrong, I'm not ashamed of anything
My heart is how it has to be
You got me wrong, you got me wrong, and all of this misunderstanding
Let it go, it's not the rule for everyone
But you don't know me anyway, you don't even know me anyway
Can't we talk, another time away from here
But you don't know me anyway, you don't even know me anyway
There's need for you, there's need for me, don't you agree
But you don't know me anyway, you don't even know me anyway
And in the end, it's not between you and me
But you don't know me anyway, you don't even know me anyway
In "You Got Me," Last Tuesday explores the theme of how people's perceptions and assumptions can create misunderstandings in relationships. The song opens with the singer expressing frustration that someone else thinks they know how they should be or what they should say. This person is keeping their thoughts to themselves, which is causing the singer to feel anxious and uncertain about how they are being perceived. The chorus then emphasizes the point that the other person has misunderstood the singer, who is not ashamed of who they are and how they feel.
The second verse continues with the idea that this person has announced that the singer is wrong, even though they don't really know them at all. The singer then addresses the person, asking if they can talk another time away from everyone else, emphasizing that this will not change anything between them. The last line of the chorus repeats, emphasizing that the misunderstanding is not the singer's fault.
Overall, this song highlights a common issue in relationships where people make assumptions and judgments about others without really getting to know them. The singer is frustrated that this person has not tried to understand them before passing judgment, and wants to reach some level of mutual understanding.
