Going to California
Led Zeppelin Lyrics

Spent my days with a woman unkind
Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine
Made up my mind to make a new start
Going To California with an aching in my heart
Someone told me there's a girl out there
With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair

Took my chances on a big jet plane
Never let them tell you that we're all the same
Oh, the sea was red and the sky was grey
Wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today
The mountains and the canyons started to tremble and shake
The children of the sun began to awake, watch out

Seems that the wrath of the Gods
Got a punch on the nose and it started to flow
I think I might be sinking
Throw me a line if I reach it in time
I'll meet you up there
Where the path runs straight and high

To find a queen without a king
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings
La la la
Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born
Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams
Telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems, mmh oh

(Ahh, ahh, ahh)

La la la la
Side a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born.
Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams,

The guitar section is in Double Drop D. Literally the opening (before the mandolin) is a D chord (minus the middle finger) and you pluck the 6th, the 1st, the 3rd and the 5th strings at this pace.

To do it consistently and take that slight pause before the repetition is literally the hardest thing I’ve tried to learn on the guitar and I’ve done well with some pretty annoying riffs.

But once I got it, I literally heard Jimmy Page for the 11 seconds I got it. It was a truly warm feeling that I never really got before because no matter what I learned on the guitar, it never sounded exact (in terms of tone).

And mind you, I just learned that TINY section today. Today being my first time trying it. After a few hours, I still don’t get it every time but I’m getting better each time I give my picking hand a rest. What terrified me was knowing I have to do that same pattern while layering in OTHER licks in the middle. That is INCREDIBLY difficult. Just watch a tutorial on this song and you’ll see what I mean.

It made me really appreciate the craftsmanship of Jimmy Page. I mean, I’ve always known how much of a genius he is but attempting to render what he created brings forth a whole new appreciation. I’ve attempted to learn the work of all great guitarists and each piece gave me a different feeling when I learned them... but this was quite something. I suppose because the song itself touches me in a way others don’t. And this isn’t even their most complex song to learn as far as guitars go.

One of my all time favorite songs.

Yes I love the tuning. My favourite is the open tuning on “That’s the way”.
