The album was recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood, New Jersey. It was released on Blue Note label as BLP 4157 and BST 84157.

This theme is used in a chrysler commercial and also used by Noir Désir in Lolita Nie En Bloc from the album One Trip One Noise.

This is a great song to turn non-jazz listeners onto for their first test-drive. It could be considered "crossover" music, because it really transcends any musical genre. Rockers can appreciate it, hip-hoppers and bluesmen all can find something of value in this song, and the amount of swagger Lee brought was just off the charts goodness. When you look at how modern his music sounded 55 years ago, that makes it even more amazing. If someone released this today, it would sound hip and fresh.

I remember listening to Barry Harris’s solo on Sidewinder 60 years ago and thinking, ‘wait a minute! He just made a mistake there. that note is wrong.’ And then he did it again. And again. And I realized, those aren't mistakes. He intends that those slurred notes belong there. And then I started listening with new ears. And of course I discovered Monk, who is by far my favorite jazz artist today.
This is a damn near perfect piece of music. I disagree with some of you: it's really not complex at all. And it does have that bass glitch at the end, but so what? It's pure joy. If I had been running that session, I would have said, that's it boys. Go home. We got it.’ 60 years later, I still believe that.

I marched as a drummajor to this in high school, circa 1964. Great band director, John Irons, outta Southern University in Baton Rouge wrote it for our band. Bell lyre carried the keys, brasses and reeds carried the rest ALMOST identical to the vinyl. Bass lines TOO! One hundred thirty piece Marching Orchestra! Proud times to a Proud Music.

Pure artistry.
Lots of great trumpet players have come and gone, but few have mastered the instrument with the same level of musical craftsmanship as evidenced here. While his out front work on this and other Blue Note recordings is exceptional, people tend to forget Lee's huge contributions to the music of Trane, and others who blazed the improvisational trails that many tried to follow, but few could actually navigate. So much music he didn't get to play. But what he left us with will forever be appreciated, long after that of those who've offered twice as much.👑🎸🎵

I always think of this album as just as quintessentially 60s as The Beatles! Must be the contemporary dance vibe. The timing fits in as well...recorded between Kennedy's assassination and The Beatles' first US tour. This number never fails to cheer me up!

Lee Morgan was a young jazz genius who, like many trumpet players it seems met an early and violent demise. But in his short time left some great jazz music behind. Joe Henderson was also an amazing musician...he never ever played any solos the same and you would be hard pressed to find a familiar "lick". Joe was a pure and creative soloist. All these guys left a legacy and paved the way to fusion.

I just heard this tune for the first time on, of all things, a highlights video of Cleveland Browns running back Leroy Kelly. They used this song as background music. i think this song was what got me chasing every sound in this song. ended up getting in to mingus, herbie, tony williams, and looking for the be all end all of rhythm sections.

When drummer Billy Higgins died in 2001, radio interview host Terry Gross (whose husband is a jazz critic) noted his passing at the end of the show ... and played-out with the beginning of "The Sidewinder", noting how the drums propelled this song.

Higgins was an masterful drummer! I also noticed last month how in Morgan's song "Search for the New Land", Higgins handled the transitions between all solos in a very remarkable manner and especially when Hancock comes in at the end with the piano, Higgins managed to change the tempo and mood of the song, it felt lonelier, more sad, more beautiful.

Higgins is like the perfect metronome... subtle yet supportive to make miniscule adjustments in tempo that most don't even hear but tells each musician, "I got you..do your thing". Same genius as Art Blakey.

Lee Morgan is one of those players that embody a word perfectly, and his word is “COOL”. Like with Clark Terry, whose word is “HAPPY”. Miles would be “POETRY”, because it’s this beautiful, perfectly designed thing. And Dizzy would be “NATURE”, because he is this amazing unstoppable life force.

How little did I realize in '63 that this pop hit would lead me into a lifetime admiration for Lee Morgan and so many of his recordings with Wayne & Joe that have riveted
me into the world of "hard bop" . I have been musically blessed by this all . RIP Billy Higgins, Bob Cranhaw , Harold Mabern , et al .

His tonguing was always so precise and the half valving very effective. A very distinct and unique hard bop drive but mellow in his own way but cut down so young. I have this LP and Rumproller the sequel. Have been a fan of his for the last 50 years. Long may his music last.

One of my favorites - Morgan did some unusual ornamentations I get a kick out of every time I listen. Classic early '60's hard bop boogie.
As of this post, 9.1K folks understand, 271 folks just don't get it.
