Cabinet Man
Lemon Demon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The day they found me, I hadn't yet been played
Inside my workshop behind the old arcade
Electric desires had unraveled all my wires
Now I'm in the box for safekeeping
The news reporters reported that I died
But all my organs were living on inside
Circuit board to brain with two lungs collecting change
One big human heart gently beeping
You can't win me, I can't be beat
I won't hurt you unless you cheat
You can't see me behind the screen
I'm half human and half machine
Thank God for business, they let me take the floor
I stood so proudly, like I was going to war
Players soon appeared and I quickly was revered
This must be what love would have felt like
Such dedication, they came from miles away
With eyes so piercing, they'd wait their turn to play
In perfect patient lines because I was in their minds
I could do whatever I felt like (Whatever I felt like)
You can't win me, I can't be beat
I won't hurt you unless you cheat
You can't see me behind the screen
I'm half human and half machine
I'm happy for years and years
And only eating the occasional maintenance man
Only driving a few kids to madness
Maybe they were predisposed to madness, who knows?
I only want to have fun
But now they're telling me my days here are done
'Cause there's a little tiny box they make in Japan
And pretty soon it's gonna fit in your hand
It's getting lonely, it's getting hard to breathe
The arcade's empty, I think it's Christmas Eve
Someone's broken in, now they're painting on my skin
Breaking me and taking my quarters
Bashing in my face with a crowbar
Kicking me and pushing me over
Now they see my blood on their sneakers
You can't win me, I can't be beat
I won't hurt you unless you cheat

You can't see me behind the screen
I'm half human and half machine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cabinet Man by Lemon Demon explore the life of an arcade game machine, that encapsulated human-like features and desires. The song begins by stating that the machine was never played and was kept safe in its workshop. The machine's desire to operate and entertain gradually took over, leading to its gradual development into a fully functioning arcade machine with its circuit board for brains, collecting money for its maintenance. As a result, the device became a popular attraction in the arcade, and people came from miles away just to play the game.

However, the lyrics take a dark turn as the machine's end is predicted with the emergence of smaller and more affordable handheld consoles. The arcade becomes deserted, and the machine is left alone to rot. The ending of the song takes a violent turn as the machine gets vandalized, and the perpetrators physically inflict pain on it. Despite being half human and half machine, the arcade game machine feels pain and blood oozes from its body. The lyrics explore the fate of obsolete technology and suggest that once technology is no longer useful, it is quickly forgotten and discarded without any regards to its contribution to past experiences.

@Snackolotl

Okay, so to sorta summarize what's happening here:

- Man somehow becomes fused with arcade machine in his workshop. The machine is sustaining him, somehow, and everybody assumes he died. In the most literal sense, his guts have fused with the electronics.

- He subsists entirely on quarters and leftover food for years. Nobody sees him in the machine, he is the most popular game, closest he's felt to being loved.

- Nintendo releases their NES console, killing the arcade industry. ("little box in japan")

- Arcade closes, man assumes it's Christmas.

- Some vandals come to destroy and rob the abandoned machine. He gets knocked over, spraypainted, and eventually the screen gets smashed.

- Vandals get blood on their shoes and realize there's a living corpse inside of the machine.

Song is probably a metaphor for the rise and fall of the arcade industry (or entertainment in general), the blood, sweat, and tears poured into game development, and the fact that these machines become literal waste after their prime has ended. An artist's life ends when people forget/kill his creation, not him. The "blood" in this case is a metaphor for the years of influence the game likely had. The use of "sneakers" may even be a reference to the longtime influence the games we grow up with have on us and how they shape us as people.

I love how it implies that the change collection area is representative of the lungs("two lungs collecting change"), then saying "it's getting hard to breathe" when nobody plays the game anymore and no more change goes through the change collection. It's this level of consistency and storytelling in his songs that makes me love his music so much
