The Lady Is A Tramp
Lena Horne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She likes the theatre and never comes late
She never bothers with people she'd hate
That's why the lady is a tramp

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
That's why the lady is a tramp

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
Life without care
She's broke, and it's "ok"

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
That's why the lady is a tramp

She gets too hungry to wait for dinner at eight
She loves the theatre but never comes late
She'd never bother with people she'd hate
That's why the lady is a tramp

She'll have no crap games with sharpies and frauds
And she won't go to Harlem in Lincolns or Fords
And she won't dish the dirt with the rest of the broads
That's why the lady is a tramp

She'd love the free, fresh wind in her hair
Life without care
She's broke, but it's "ok"

Hates California, it's so cold and so damp
That's why the lady

That's why the lady
That's why the lady is a tramp

Overall Meaning

The song "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne is a classic American song that describes the character of a woman who does not conform to society's norms. The song's lyrics suggest that the woman in question is not interested in being a part of high society, with lines like "She never bothers with people she'd hate" and "She'll have no crap games with sharpies and frauds." Instead, she prefers a simpler, more carefree life. She enjoys the theatre and the freedom of having the wind in her hair, but doesn't feel the need to acquiesce to social norms.

The song is a celebration of individuality, and an assertion that people should live life on their own terms. It has become an anthem of sorts for those who refuse to conform to societal expectations. The lyrics suggest that the woman in question is happy with her life and doesn't feel the need to change it for anyone else.

My favorite LH performance!! Thanks for posting.

Holy hell, I never knew there was this version of the song. The Sinatra version never made sense to me, but hearing the full (if slightly abridged) context makes it make sense!

Broadway Classics

It's been recorded by many other singers, too. Look for Ella Fitzgerald's version.

Steve Little

Yes I agree never was into the Sinatra version but love this one.
