Born in Argentina and though he had hits with other orchestras, it was with Cuban La Sonora Matancera he reached the peak of his fame singing Afro-Cuban boleros. Although he got his first break into the music scene through LV 10 radio Cuyo it was until 1941 when in Chile he gathered a conjunto (group of musician / band) and started sing live in front of an audience.

Tristeza Marina
Leo Marini Lyrics

Esperando no estará Margot
Esperando no estará Margot.
Leo Marini's Tristeza Marina is a heart-wrenching song about a man who has to choose between his love for the sea and his love for a woman named Margot. The opening lines of the song, "Tú quieres mas el mar" (You love the sea more), sets the tone for Margot's pain as she tells the singer that his love for the sea has caused their relationship to suffer. The crystal-clear quality of her voice breaks as she says this, emphasizing her sadness.
The singer remembers Margot's face, which used to shine like the sunset. He recalls her telling him that he had to choose between her and the sea, and he refused to do so. However, Margot leaves him, and he's left alone with the melancholy of his own thoughts. Margot is described as a woman who wore a blue beret and had a cross hanging from her chest.
The chorus of the song speaks to the singer's bond with the sea, his loneliness, and how it has taken all his loved ones away from him. He expresses the fear that when he eventually returns to port, Margot will not be waiting for him. The song touches on the complexities of being in love with two things at the same time and how it can lead to loss and heartbreak.
