Oh Why?
Little Richard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I dreamed I was arrested
Charged with a crime
Forgot to plead innocent
'Cause darling, you're not mine

Oh, why?
Why should it happen to me?
Well, I'm cryin', "mercy
Have mercy on me"

The policeman said maybe
The judge he can agree
The jury keep on guessing
But the DA says it's me

Oh, why?
Why should it happen to me?
Well, I'm cryin', "mercy
Have mercy on me"

The lawyer said, "plead guilty
And try to cop a plea"
But why should I try plead guilty
When you don't belongs to me?

Oh, why?
Why should it happen to me?
Well, I'm cryin', "have mercy
Have mercy on me"

The policeman said, "Maybe"
The judge he can agree
The jury keep on guessing
But the DA says it's me

Oh, why?
Why should it happen to me?

Well, I'm cryin', "mercy
Have mercy on me"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Little Richard's song "Oh Why?" are that of a man who is lamenting being falsely accused of a crime. He explains that in his dream, he was arrested and charged with a crime, but he forgot to plead innocent because the woman he loves, who he believes will clear his name, is not his. He questions why this is happening to him and begs for mercy throughout the song.

The use of the dream sequence in the lyrics implies that the singer's current situation of being falsely accused is deeply troubling and affecting him on a subconscious level. His desperation for the woman he loves to clear his name reveals his dependence on her and how his fate is entirely in her hands. The lines "The jury keep on guessing, but the DA says it's me" highlights the injustice present in the justice system and how the truth is often ignored in favor of biases and personal opinions.

In essence, the lyrics of "Oh Why?" expresses the feelings of fear and desperation in the face of false accusations, as well as the agony of depending on someone you love to clear your name only to realize that their loyalty may not be with you.

The extra added echo ruins the original dynamics of this track. There is another version on You Tube that hasn't been artifically enhanced.

Leroy Domino Davis

Sounds like he was a Fat's Domino fan ...

Sean Magee

He was! Richard liked and was very much influenced by Fats piano playing style. They both recorded in the same RnB studio in New Orleans. ๐Ÿ˜˜

This sounds a lot like Heartbreak Hotel by Elvis.

Sean Magee

With respect, I don't see the comparison. Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel":- down tempo "Blues" number, and the 'chord progression' is entirely different from Richards "Oh Why":- an up tempo RnB (jump Blues) number. Love both๐Ÿ˜˜. May they RIP๐Ÿ˜ข
