Oh Why
Little Richard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I dreamed I was arrested
Charged with a crime
Forgot to plead innocent
'Cause darling, you're not mine

Oh, why?
Why should it happen to me?
Well, I'm cryin', "mercy
Have mercy on me"

The policeman said maybe
The judge he can agree
The jury keep on guessing
But the DA says it's me

Oh, why?
Why should it happen to me?
Well, I'm cryin', "mercy
Have mercy on me"

The lawyer said, "plead guilty
And try to cop a plea"
But why should I try plead guilty
When you don't belongs to me?

Oh, why?
Why should it happen to me?
Well, I'm cryin', "have mercy
Have mercy on me"

The policeman said, "Maybe"
The judge he can agree
The jury keep on guessing
But the DA says it's me

Oh, why?
Why should it happen to me?

Well, I'm cryin', "mercy
Have mercy on me"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Little Richard's "Oh Why" tell the story of a man dreaming about being arrested for a crime he did not commit. He forgot to plead innocent because he was too preoccupied with the fact that the woman he loves does not belong to him. The repetition of the phrase "Oh, why?" emphasizes the emotional distress the man is feeling, questioning why these events are happening to him. He is crying for mercy from the judge and the jury, but the District Attorney still considers him the perpetrator of the crime. The lawyer advises him to plead guilty and bargain, but the man refuses to do so as he cannot admit to a crime he did not commit.

The song's lyrics convey the common theme of unreciprocated love and how it can affect an individual's life. The focus on the legal system and the justice process serves as a metaphor for the man's struggles. The man is fighting for justice in the courtroom but is also struggling to find justice in his love life. Little Richard's use of repetition and a simple blues melody adds to the emotional depth of the song.

Played and sing this song for my brother at his funneral

Alan Cassaro

The extra added echo ruins the original dynamics of this track. There is another version on You Tube that hasn't been artifically enhanced.

Leroy Domino Davis

Sounds like he was a Fat's Domino fan ...

Sean Magee

He was! Richard liked and was very much influenced by Fats piano playing style. They both recorded in the same RnB studio in New Orleans. 😘

Chinmay

This sounds a lot like Heartbreak Hotel by Elvis.

Sean Magee

With respect, I don't see the comparison. Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel":- down tempo "Blues" number, and the 'chord progression' is entirely different from Richards "Oh Why":- an up tempo RnB (jump Blues) number. Love both😘. May they RIP😢

Joel Gomez

!!!How llea!!!
