Yes it's me
Little Richard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Well, if you hear somebody knocking on your door
If you see something crawling across the floor
Baby, it'll be me and I'll be looking for you

If you see a head a-peeping from a crawdad hole
If you see somebody climbing up a telephone pole
Baby, it'll be me and I'll be looking for you
I'm gonna look on he mountain and in the deep blue sea
Gonna search all the forests and look and look in every tree

Well, if you feel something heavy on your fishing hook
If you see a funny face in your comic book
Baby, it'll be me and I'll be looking for you

If you hear a thought calling out in the night
If you see somebody hanging from a lamp post bright
Baby, it'll be me and I'll be looking for you

Well if you see somebody looking in all the cars
If you see a rocket ship on its way to Mars
Baby, it'll be me and I'll be looking for you

Gonna look in the city where the lights are blue
Gonna search the countryside, and all the haystacks, too

We'll, if you see a new face on a totem pole

If you find a lump in your sugar bowl
Baby, it'll be me and I'll be looking for you

Overall Meaning

In "Yes it's me," Little Richard portrays a relentless pursuit of love, assuring his desired partner that no matter where they may go or what they may encounter, he will always be searching for them. The song begins by describing the various unexpected manifestations in which he may appear, such as knocking on the door or crawling across the floor. Little Richard conveys the message that he is determined to find his love, regardless of the obstacles or the peculiar places from which he may emerge.

The lyrics continue to illustrate his determination as he expresses his intention to search high and low, in the mountains, the deep blue sea, the forests, and even every tree. He conveys a sense of unwavering commitment, stating that he is willing to explore every possible location to find his beloved. The imagery of fishing hooks, comic books, thought in the night, and a bright lamp post are used to convey the idea that he will leave no stone unturned in his pursuit.

Little Richard also emphasizes that his search will extend to both urban and rural areas, symbolized by the lights of the city and the haystacks of the countryside. He further illustrates this by mentioning peculiar scenarios like a new face on a totem pole or a lump in a sugar bowl. These unusual images serve to show that he is not deterred by any peculiar or unexpected circumstances that may arise during his quest for love.

Overall, "Yes it's me" is a song about relentless perseverance and the unwavering dedication one can have in the pursuit of love. Little Richard uses vivid and playful imagery to emphasize his determination, making it clear that he will continue searching until he finds the object of his affection.

H.B. Barnum (Label owner and producer of this) told me in 1963 after this was released in 1962, that L.R. needed money because gospel wasn't covering the bills. These would be new recordings after he "quit" secular music and did not want it known that he was going secular again.. These were not secret recordings with held, but contemporary 1962 recordings without saying it was L.R.
