Born María de los Dolores Flores Ruíz, Lola Flores became a famous dancer and singer of Andalusian folklore at a very young age, featuring in films from 1939 to 1987. Her greatest success was in folklore shows with Manolo Caracol, who was her artistic partner until 1951.
In 1958 she married Antonio González el Pescaílla, a guitarist. She had three children: Dolores (singer and actress Lolita Flores); rock musician, singer and actor Antonio Flores; and singer and actress Rosario Flores.
Lola Flores died of cancer in 1995, aged 72, and was interred in the Cementerio de la Almudena in Madrid. Shortly after her death, her distraught 34-year-old son died of a drug overdose and was buried near her.

Gitana soy y no lo niego
Tengo la noche y el dia
Me falta siempre el dinero
Me sobra mi alegría
(Palmadas y guitarra)
The lyrics in Lola Flores's song Zorongo Gitano express her pride in her gypsy heritage and the struggles that come with being a gypsy. She states that she is a gypsy and she does not deny it. She has the day and the night, but she always lacks money. Despite this, she always has her joy to keep her going. The people say that there are only 24 hours in a day, but if there were 27, they would love her for three more hours. This could be interpreted as her being so captivating and fascinating that people can't get enough of her.
The second stanza reveals Lola's deep love for someone who brings out the best in her. She is willing to forget all her worries and problems when she is with them. She feels like she's playing cards and enjoying the moment with every kiss. The final chorus echoes the idea that gypsies have royal blood and that the hand they hold, symbolized by the "palmita," must contain their legacy.
