Stay Awake
London Grammar Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I am the fine idea you crave
I live and breathe under the moon
And when you cross that bridge
I'll come find you
Stay awake with me
You know I can't just let you be
Take your hand and come and find me
I don't have a skin like you do
To keep it all in like you do
I don't have a soul like you
The only one I have
Is the one I stole from you
Stay awake with me
You know I can't just let you be
Stay awake with me
Take your hand and come and find me
Stay awake with me
You know I can't just let you be
Stay awake with me
Take your hand and come and find me
The lyrics to London Grammar's song Stay Awake suggest a deep yearning for connection and companionship. The opening stanza portrays the singer as a blank slate waiting to be written on, an idea in search of a muse. They live and breathe under the moon, creating an ethereal, dreamlike quality to the lyrics that characterizes the emotional intensity of the singer. When the object of their affection crosses the bridge, the singer vows to find them, as if drawn by forces outside their control.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the singer's desire for the object of their affection to stay with them and not leave. Their plea is urgent and earnest, almost desperate, as they implore the object of their affection to stay awake with them. The singer wants to hold their hand and be found, noting that they cannot simply let the other person be, as their connection is too strong.
The bridge of the song emphasizes the singer's differences from the object of their affection. They note that they lack the emotional defenses that the other person has, as they do not have a skin or soul to protect themselves. The singer even suggests that the only soul they have is the one they stole from the object of their affection, suggesting a parasitic relationship between the two.
