More recently, its principal conductors have included Pierre Monteux (1961β64), Istvan Kertesz (1965β68), AndrΓ© Previn (1968β79) and Claudio Abbado (1979β88). From 1988-1995, the American Michael Tilson-Thomas took over, and in 1995, became principal guest conductor. Sir Colin Davis served as the LSO's Principal Conductor from 1995-2006, and in 2007 took the post of President of the orchestra. On 1 January 2007, Valery Gergiev became the LSO's Principal Conductor. Previn holds the title of Conductor Laureate. In 2006, Daniel Harding became the co-principal guest conductor alongside Tilson Thomas. Richard Hickox is the Associate Guest Conductor of the LSO.
The LSO became the first British orchestra to play overseas when it went to Paris in 1906. The LSO was due to sail on the RMS Titanic for a concert in New York in April 1912 but fortunately had to change the booking at the last minute. It was also the first to play in the United States, in 1912, and in 1973 it was the first to be invited to take part in the Salzburg Festival. It continues to make tours around the world.
In 1966 the London Symphony Chorus (LSC) was formed to complement the work of the LSO. with more that two hundred amateur singers, the LSC maintains a close association with the LSO; however it has developed an independent life, which allows it to partner other leading orchestras.
The LSO has long been considered the most extraverted of the London orchestras. For most of its life it refused to allow women to become members, ostensibly on the grounds that women would affect the sound of the orchestra (there has been a similar controversy at the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra). There is an air of youthful high spirits to much of its music-making that is shown off in performances of such composers as Berlioz and Prokofiev. The LSO has often had internationally-known players as wind soloists, including such artists as James Galway (flute), Gervase de Peyer (clarinet), Roger Lord (oboe), Osian Ellis (harp), John Georgiadis (violin) and Barry Tuckwell (horn). Like most ensembles, the orchestra has a great ability to vary its sound, producing very different tone colours under such diverse conductors as Stokowski (with whom it made a series of memorable recordings), Adrian Boult, Jascha Horenstein, Georg Solti, AndrΓ© Previn, George Szell, Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, John Barbirolli, and Karl BΓΆhm, who developed a close relationship with the orchestra late in his life. BΓΆhm and Bernstein each held the title of LSO President in their later years.
Clive Gillinson, a former cellist with the orchestra, served as the LSO's Managing Director from 1984 to 2005, and is widely credited with bringing great stability to the LSO's organization after severe fiscal troubles.[1] Since 2005, Kathryn McDowell is the Managing Director of the LSO.[2]
Christmas
London Symphony Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They get so excited
Waking up on Christmas morning
Hours before the winter sun's ignited.
They believe in dreams and all they mean
Including heaven's generosity.
Peeping round the door
To see what parcels are for free
And Tommy doesn't know what day it is.
He doesn't know who Jesus was
Or what praying is.
How can he be saved
From the eternal grave?
Surrounded by his friends
He sits so silently
And unaware of everything.
Playing poxy pinball,
Picks his nose and smiles and
Pokes his tongue at everything.
I believe in love
But how can men who've never seen
Light be enlightened.
Only if he's cured
Will his spirits future level ever heighten.
And Tommy doesn't know what day it is.
He doesn't know who Jesus was
Or what praying is.
How can he be saved
From the eternal grave?
Tommy, can you hear me?
Tommy, can you hear me?
Tommy, can you hear me?
How can he be saved?
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me!
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me!
Tommy, can you hear me?
Tommy, can you hear me?
Tommy, can you hear me?
How can he be saved?
The lyrics to "Christmas" by the London Symphony Orchestra paint a vivid picture of the innocence and excitement of children on Christmas morning. It begins by describing the joy and anticipation on their faces as they wake up, long before the sun rises. Their belief in dreams and the generosity of heaven is emphasized, as they eagerly peek around the door to see what gifts await them. The curiosity and wonder of children at Christmastime is beautifully captured in these lines.
However, the song takes a poignant turn with the introduction of Tommy, a character who is unaware of the significance of Christmas and lacks knowledge about Jesus and prayer. Tommy is depicted as disconnected from the holiday spirit and spends his time playing pinball, oblivious to the deeper meanings of life and spirituality. The lyrics suggest that without being enlightened, Tommy is trapped in a state of ignorance, or as described metaphorically, facing the "eternal grave."
The repeated refrain of "Tommy, can you hear me?" expresses a desperate plea for Tommy to awaken to a higher consciousness and find salvation. It is a cry for him to break free from his current state and experience a transformative healing. The chorus of "See me, feel me, touch me, heal me" reinforces this desire for Tommy to connect with a greater understanding and meaning in life.
Overall, "Christmas" by the London Symphony Orchestra contrasts the innocent joy of children on Christmas morning with the spiritual emptiness and lack of awareness in Tommy's life. It raises questions about the possibility of finding salvation and enlightenment, urging the listener to consider the deeper significance of Christmas beyond material gifts and festivities.

THE MILLION-DOLLAR QUESTION: Will you go to Heaven when you die? Have you lied, stolen, used Godβs name in vain, or lusted (which Jesus said was adultery, Matthew. 5:28)? If so, God sees you as a liar, thief, blasphemer, and adulterer at heart. If you die in your sins, you will end up in a terrible place called Hell. But there's good news. Though we broke God's Law, Jesus paid the fine by dying on the cross: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John. 3:16). Then Jesus rose from the dead and was seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses. He fulfilled all the prophecies of the promised Savior. Please, today, repent and trust Jesus, and God will forgive you and grant you the gift of eternal life (Ephesians. 2:8,9). Then, to show your gratitude, read the Bible daily and obey it, join a Christian church, and be baptized. Visit https://t.co/jp8bFXYtmE and https://t.co/xnaFXWz1gr. .. .
